All Things Must Pass

Today would have been George Harrison's 67th Birthday had we not lost him to illness 10 years ago. George was the Water to Lennon and McCartney's Air/Fire energies, the emotional stream running deep beneath the music, flowing with buoyancy and pathos, always like a river rushing towards the sea where he longed to merge with the Undifferentiated One-Ness in whatever form it took. Indeed, he taught us that it's useless to "ask me if my love will grow ", because "all things must pass", but that if we have patience - "Sun, sun, sun, here it comes!"

Today's Schedule -

"Israeli Soul Afternoon" starts early (12:30pm) and includes music from David Grisman's Songs of Our Fathers and Kumah's "Aliyah Revolution" CD with performances by Aharit Hayamim Hai, The Moshav Band, Reva l'Sheva, Neshama Carlebach, Noah Solomon, Menashe Neshama Ensemble, Chaim David, Shlock Rock, Yood, Gershon Verboda, Naftali Abramson, Benzion Eliyahu Lehrer, Aspaklaria, The Footsteps, Aaron Razel and Even Sh'Siyah .

All afternoon we'll be listening to special Purim comedy audio pieces by Ariel Elisha Leon Rosen, Torahs from Rabbi Chaim Richman and Betzalel Phillip Edwards, a special "Bat Melech" on Devorah the Prophetess by Rebbetzen Rena Richman, and other aural surprises.

Starting at 6:30pm this evening we begin our tribute to George Harrison. Stay tuned for more!

Pirate Radio Daze - Pre-Purim Tuesday!

Harrrrr - Urggh - and other Pirate Noises - it's time to put the cutlass between your teeth & walk the plank, Mateys! Welcome to the Tuesday Before Purim! We're giving no quarter, taking no prisoners - in fact, we're releasing the prisoners! Setting ourselves and each other free! Liberating our souls and spirits (and in some very literal cases our actual bodies) from constriction, bondage, depression and - as Rebbe Nachman reminds us, "Despair does not exist!" So you thought that really bad mood you're in was despair? Naw... just the Yetzer trying to mess with you. Put on a happy face and "fake it 'till you make it," even if you don't feel it yet - we promise the feeling will happen, FOR REAL, even if you have to start out with half a foot forward. Let's stay in-step together, all week long as we hurl towards our goal of Purim and may all of our days be sweeter than Hamantashen (which, by the way, is not the kind of Hamantashen we used to have back in the day but that's another story ... for later!)

Today's Torah Schedule:

  • 5:45pm - Rabbi Chaim Richman's "The Hidden Miracles of Adar"

Today's Music Schedule:
  • 7:30am - 2pm - Lorelai's Extra-Long Version of the "Morning Dew for the Morning Jew" carries on with extra full-length rejoicing because she's FINALLY going to (b'ezrat HaShem) move her apartment and this is a major cause for celebration!
  • 2pm - 6pm - "Israeli Soul" Afternoon features music from Adeloyada, Bini Landau, Dani Meir Maimon, Sasson and EXTRA SPECIAL AUDIO SEGMENTS from Ariel Elisha Leon Rosen - "James Feinstein, Private Eye" (2:40pm), "Pirate Hour - Fastest Torah Minute" (3:35pm - it's short, don't miss it!), "The Adventures of Baruch and Chaim in Yetzias Mitzraim" (3:55pm) and the full-length version of "Yanki & Rivki, Part 2" (4:45pm) - hilarious stuff, don't miss it (and realize all times are RELATIVE, our broadcast scheduling software isn't always running on Atomic Time and some files are mislabeled)

  • 7pm - Simon & Garfunkel's Concert in Central Park (1981) - the best!

Countdown to Purim - Monday, Monday!

Our Countdown to Purim Week begins Monday with new music, Torah and an invitation to participate in our Purim Playlist Party. Get out your groggers, Purim is Coming! Purim is Coming! We're inviting our Radio Free Nachlaot listeners to compile their own personal playlist of anywhere between 6 - 12 songs, the theme of which should be YOUR particular "take" on Purim. What does Purim mean to you? Hamantashen and hangovers? Masks and Merriment? Deliverance and Defiance? Revelation and Rebellion? Whatever it is, we want to hear from you. Send your playlist (and also it would be very helpful if you sent us MP3, .wav or other files we can covert and play) to our email address (radiofreenachlaot@gmail.com) and we'll be playing your tunes all week long leading up to Purim. Meanwhile, Monday is full of interesting new music, oldies and favorites, and later tonight, a post-tribute birthday nod to the late Grateful Dead keyboardist Vince Welnick and Nina Simone, both of whom were born on February 21st (which yes was yesterday but ... ) Steve was driving the bus yesterday and Lorelai is more inclined to play birthday tributes - to each his own, that's what makes it fun! :)

Shabbos is Coming - Shabbos is Coming

Shabbos Is Coming! Shabbos Is Coming!
Have you got your shopping done?
Have you prepared your ingredients?
Have you put the kids to bed?
Well then, it sounds like you are ready to get to work -- and we're right there with you -- Radio Free Nachlaot Cookin' For Shabbos - The soundtrack for your thursday night!!!! and boy do we have a show for you! Music from Folk to Rock, Torah, Jerry, Shlomo, and a whole lot more!!! Shabbos is Coming, Shabbos is Coming -- let's go out and meet the Holy Day!

Eau d'Humanitie! What's That Smell - Could It Be Burning Bridges & Scorched Reputations?

"Masks" and the theme of revealing what has been concealed has been the theme this pre-Purim week at Radio Free Nachlaot.

The energies of the World have also been at work revealing the concealed, and concealing the revealed. From news reports about identity thefts for assassins to character assassination allegations against beloved and charismatic spiritual leaders, masks of all kind have been ripped away to reveal the vulnerable, fallible humanity beneath.

Perhaps the ultimate lesson here is - HaShem, Master of The Universe, sees and knows EVERYTHING, and yet somehow it's much easier for us to live with that undeniable reality than the idea of our fellow humans seeing and knowing everything about us. No matter how much we want to hide, pretend, or otherwise deny our own fragility - it's there, and as Purim approaches, there's really nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. As has been said before (and will be said again): One thing you can't hide - when you're crippled inside.

So what's OUR job here at Radio Free Nachlaot? We pick up the pieces. We provide a safe, loving and musically enabling environment for our beloved Listeners. We play the music we love, the music you love, the music of our souls, the Soundtrack of Our Lives. It's OK to take your mask off when you're with us . . .

Today's Torah Schedule:
  • 1pm, 5:45pm - Rabbi Betzalel Phillip Edwards Chevrya Series (Part 7) continues.
  • 3:30pm, 6:45pm, 9:00pm - Rabbi Chaim Richman's Parsha Shavua - Terumah
  • 2pm - Rabbi Lazer Gurkow "The Story of Purim"
  • 4:45pm - Rabbi Moshe New "Beyond the Gallows" (yes, hang 'em high, Haman!)

Today's Musical Schedule:
  • 8:30am - 1pm - Lorelai's final "Morning Dew for the Morning Jew" Show for the week starts with a Happy Birthday musical tribute to John Travolta and Yoko Ono (despite many protests from the listening audience) Don't worry, we only played 2 Yoko songs and believe it or not, they weren't bad! The lineup continues with songs from The Bee Gees, Santana, Pete Seeger, Lowen & Navarro, Anne Lennox, Gypsy Kings, Gogol Bordello, Black Uhuru, Coldplay, Elvis & Lisa Marie Presley and so much more. Masks, pretense, identity issues ... it's all there, you just have to listen!
  • 1pm - 6pm "Israeli Soul" Afternoon features music from Beit HaBubot, Shlomo Katz and Ariel Elisha Leon Rosen - just the thing you need to enjoy this beautiful Yerushalmy day!
  • 6pm - David Bowie's "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars" is featured in a double album "Compare and Contrast" set which is followed by Bob Marley's "Legend" album. What could be more diametrically opposed to each other than Bowie's Ziggy Stardust persona - the ultimate in artifice - and Bob Marley - the ultimate in naturalness? But ... who is wearing the mask here? Is Bowie really the Great Pretender, is Bob really the Natural High? Think about it!
  • 8pm - The String Cheese Incident - the greatest of them all! - continues until Steve Levine takes over the controls and brings us his "Cookin' for Erev Shabbos" Show starting between 9 and 9:30pm - stay tuned and see what's cookin' for Shabbos ... one thing about Steve, he'll never deceive you!
Enjoy your beautiful day - don't let it slip away. We love you. Shabbat Shalom in advance!

The Masquerade Continues

This week's Adar-appropriate theme of Masks - the ones we wear, the ones we hide behind - continues in our musical lineup today.

We're featuring one artist who is famous for his mutable persona and one who wore a mask which eventually killed her - Bob Dylan and Billie Holiday. Why does one artist thrive on personality fragmentation and another artist die from it? What is it in the ability to morph from one identity to another that ensures the survival of one personality type but sends another into darkness, addiction and death? Both Billie and Bob felt and expressed the pain and angst of their time - only Billie couldn't overcome the times she lived in, or the color of her skin ... and Bob defined the times, changed them, and although some say his career has outlasted his ability to perform, we'll let history write the final chapter on that one ... the proverbial Jury is still, B"H, OUT on that one!

But that's only the beginning! During our "Israeli Soul" Afternoon we're also ripping the masks off of new musical talent, bringing down the highest Torahs for Purim, and delighting you with a fresh new offerings from unexpected sources - you won't want to miss it! Plus, to add to our merriment and kick it up a notch, a special preview of what will eventually (perhaps even as soon as the coming weekend) be a "Sunday Brunch in New York" Show, starring King of the Klezmers - Marty Levitt!

Today's Torah Schedule:
  • 1pm, 5:45pm - Rabbi Betzalel Phillip Edward's Series on The Chevyra (Part 6) Continues.
  • 4:45pm, 8:45pm - Rabbi Chaim Richman's Parsha Shavua: Terumah
  • 3pm - Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach's Purim Torah - Mamash, The Highest! :)
  • 6pm - Rabbi Chaim Richman's Purim Special

Today's Music Schedule:
  • 8:30am - 1pm:  Lorelai's "Morning Dew for the Morning Jew" Show starts with Rebbe Nachman's "Tikkun HaKlali" and then continues through the morning, featuring Neil Young, Lucinda Williams, Bruce Springsteen, The Andrews Sisters, Arrowsmith, Santana, The Fifth Dimension, The Beatles, Yes, Sade, Nina Simone, Barry White, Genesis, Joni Mitchell and other assorted artists contributing to the eclectic mix. You may not know what's coming next but you'll enjoy the ride!
  • 1pm - 6:00pm- "Israeli Soul" Afternoon features music from Bini Landau (a new young musical force coming from the musicians village Chavat Maon in the Chevron Hills), Meeiver Ligvoolot, Shir Yaakov and Darshan, Semantra, new tunes from  Dani Meir Maman, the amazing  In Lakech and (even though it's not Sunday Brunch in New York yet) - Marty Levitt, "King of the Klezmer" - you'll LOVE it!
  • 6:30pm - Billie Holiday - "Lady Day - The Columbia Years." A legend sings her heart out, literally.
  • 7:30pm - Miri Ben-Ari - Israeli Hip-Hop Violinist! Amazing!
  • 9:00pm - Bob Dylan's "Street Legal" Album
  • 10:00pm - Bob Dylan and The Band - "Paint The Daytime Black" - the whole thing!
Stay with us. We're here, holding your hand ... all the way. There's no way we're letting go.

You Can Leave Your Mask On - for now, but get ready for Purim because IT'S COMIN' OFF!

Adar continues and with it the theme of Concealment / Revelation. What masks do we wear every day, when do we discard them? How often do we allow others to see beneath our carefully crafted surfaces? Do you wear your "Game Face" when you venture into the Outside World, do you allow vulnerability to peek through occasionally? Be assured, dear friends and fans, that Purim is Coming, Purim is Coming - and with it, masks will be ripped aside and aspects of your Real Self WILL be revealed, whether you want them to or not - it's just the phenomenon of the Time.
We're continuing to bring you special Purim-themed Torahs as well as music that reflects the sense of illusion / dis-illusion, distortion and refraction, concealed truths and revealed angst that goes into making Adar the very special month that it is. We at Radio Free Nachlaot give you a blessing (and please bless us back!) that during Adar we should see ourselves for who and what we really are, and have the courage and integrity to own our own "stuff" - and DEAL with it, preferably before it becomes toxic to ourselves and others - and that we should always find the "Nekudot Tovot" (good points) within ourselves as well as within those around us.

Today's Torah Schedule:
  • 1pm, 5:45pm - Rabbi Betzalel Phillip Edwards' series on The Chevrya (Part 5) Continues.
  • 3:30pm, 6:30pm, 9:45pm - Rabbi Chaim Richman's Parsha Shavua - Terumah - debuts
  • 4:15pm - Rabbi Chaim Richman's Purim Special
  • 6:30pm - Rabbi Mendel Kaplan's "Holiday Basics - Purim"

Today's Music Schedule:
  • 8am - 1pm - Lorelai's "Morning Dew for the Morning Jew" Show - Zepplin, Stones, Tina Turner, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Tony Bennett, Tracie Chapman, The Who, Janis Joplin, Laura Nyro - just a few of the many artists being played around the theme of "Inner and Outer Masks." OK, it's subtle, but Lorelai expects a lot from her audience.
  • 1pm - 6pm: "Israeli Soul" Afternoon features music from Sasha Rose, HaBanot Nechama, Sasson, Benzion Eliyahu Lehrer, Ehud Banai and Raz Hartman.
  • 6pm - Ben Bresky's "The Beat" (by special permission) featuring Ron Wiseman (pictured), an Olah Chadash (new immigrant), Bal Tshuva who makes great Jewish Reggae music. Be sure to listen!
  • 7pm - The Doors "Waiting for the Sun" Album - followed by Lucinda Williams' "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road" Album. Why? To "compare and contrast" - Jim Morrison and Lucinda Williams - polar opposites or, weirdly, separated at birth into opposite genres? :)
  • 8:30pm - l'kavod Canada (the host country of the 2010 Winter Olympics) - Neil Young "The Complete Joel Berenson Tapes" (thanks Harvey Milstein!) - too good to miss!
  • 9:50pm - Jethro Tull "Thick as a Brick" - 25th Anniversary Edition. Wow!
  • 10:30pm - The Boss! Bruce Springsteen Live at Hammersmith Odeon, London (1975) - you won't be able to sleep after this album so plan on staying up all night listening to Radio Free Nachlaot - The Boss would want it that way!

Tonight we'll be featuring music from The Who's Quadrophenia - the classic Rock Opera - with plenty of great stuff in-between.

Poems, Prayers and Promises

Poetry is the essence, the concentrated dense elemental stuff that dreams are made of, and everybody knows that on some level it's the Poets who are keeping the blood of this world pumping through our collective hearts. Tehillim (Psalms), the sublime poetry of King David, is the archetype for all poetry - expressing hope, fear, faith, anguish, betrayal, exaltation, doubt, decisiveness, loneliness, love and the whole range of human emotions as filtered through the lens of HaShem's  Providence and Grace. Poets are our theme today on Radio Free Nachlaot, and we're paying tribute to two of the greatest musical poets of our lifetime - Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell.

OK, it's true that Leonard Cohen IS Jewish, dafka. Joni isn't on a technical level but nothing is more Jewish than spinning the hay of suffering into the gold of poetry, and nobody does that better than Joni, which makes her music as Jewish as "Hava Nagila."

Perhaps it's the impending Dark of the Moon which drives the programming today. As the energies of Shvat are poured into the waiting vessel which is Adar we shift from Air to Water, from intellect to feeling, from the personal to the universal ... and back again, round and round we go! Next week will feature special AstroloJew programs from Lorelai to celebrate Rosh Chodesh Adar and the renewing of the soul, being poured out like water ....

Today's Torah Schedule:
  • 1pm - Rabbi Chaim Richman's new piece "An Altar of Earth" Debuts
  • 2:45pm, 7:45pm, 9pm - Rabbi Chaim Richman's Parsha Shavua "Mishpatim"

Today's Musical Schedule:
  • 8am - 1pm Lorelai's "Morning Dew for the Morning Jew" show starts off, as always, with the very essence of Poetry and Prayer - Rebbe Nachman's "Tikkun HaKlali," and continues throughout the morning with songs of poetry, prayers and promises.
  • 1pm - 6pm : "Israeli Soul" Afternoon's theme is "Locals We Love - The Poets" and  starts off with three extraordinary new songs from Dani Meir Maman, and continues with the music of Aharit HaYamim, Meirah Miriam Bet-Dovid and David Dome.
  • 6pm - Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell! Selections from Leonard Cohen's "Live in London" Show and Joni's epic "Court and Spark," acknowledged by all as the apex of her singer/songwriter phase.
  • 8pm - Dave Matthews Band The Central Park Live Concert (2003). Dave Matthews is a poet in his own right and his voice blends right in to the cry of poets throughout the generations in love, anguish, longing, joyfulness and intimacy.

A little bit after 9pm tonight STEVE takes over the virtual steering wheel of this Magic Bus that is Radio Free Nachlaot! Stay tuned for Steve's "Cookin' for Erev Shabbos" Show and more surprises to come!

IMPORTANT LISTENER ALERT: Sunday for our "Sunday Night Live" Show we're going to be BROADCASTING LIVE FROM THE JERUSALEM SOUL CENTER (39 Betzalel Street in Nachlaot). Join us in REAL life or by LIVE RADIO as Ezra Amachi and the local Chevre put on SUCH A GEVALDT HAPPENING, you MAMASH can't miss it!!! Sometimes if you wait long enough, the things you missed the first time may come around again ...which brings us to today's featured musical offering (BIG thanks to Ben Bresky and Yishai Fleisher from Israel National Radio for permission to rebroadcast selections from Ben's "The Beat" Radio Show - which is, by the way, the best!). Yes, finally Lorelai will be able to hear the ROCK AMI Concert that played last year in October at Kraft Stadium in Jerusalem. Originally planning on attending, she was unable to do so as a Funeral For A Friend (literally, sadly true) made her too distraught to listen to music. So now enough time has passed and "Lo and Behold" - you can listen to it too, this evening on Radio Free Nachlaot. The concert features  music from Soulfarm, Yood, Piamenta, the Moshav Band, Majuda, Semantra, and Gershon Veroba.

Today's Torah Schedule:
  • 1pm, 6pm, 10:30pm - Rabbi Chaim Richman's Parsha Shavua "Mispatim"
  • 3pm - Rebbetzen Rena Richman's "Bat Melech" Series Continues - "Devorah the Prophetess"

Today's Music Schedule:
  • 8am - 1pm - Lorelai's "Morning Dew for the Morning Jew" Show - mixing it up with color-themed songs and various subtle and not-so-subtle musical tributes to loved ones far and near.
  • 1pm - 6pm - "Israeli Soul" Afternoon features Neshama Carlebach, HaDag Nahash, Simply Tsfat and for those who know how "Everything Old is New Again" - Israeli '70's Supergroups Kaveret (Poogy!) and Tammuz.
  • 6pm - ROCK AMI Concert from October 2009, Kraft Stadium in Jerusalem - with music from Soulfarm, Yood, Piamenta, the Moshav Band, Majuda, Semantra, and Gershon Veroba.should be great!
  • 8pm - Eric Clapton - some say he is G*d. OK, he's not, but he IS a god with a lower-case "g" - guitar god! We'll be listening to Clapton's 461 Ocean Boulevard - get ready for a slow hand and a smooth ride!
  • 11pm - Hot Tuna! Mystic Theater (Petaluma, California) Concert from December 2000

You've Got A Friend

"You've Got A Friend" is the theme today at Radio Free Nachlaot. Not only is today the birthday of legendary Singer - Songwriter Carole King but it's also a day to remember "that's what friends are for" - as demonstrated by the star-studded cast of musicians who came together to remember another friend, Lowell George, and created a tribute concert album "Rock and Roll Doctor" (1997) in his memory. That's what friends are for - and you've got a friend right here at Radio Free Nachlaot.

Purim is coming! Purim is coming! In honor of Purim we're going to start featuring extended Purim-themed Torahs. Today we kick it off with special Purim Torahs from Rabbi Chaim Richman and Reb Shlomo Carlebach. One can only say: Gevaldt!

Tell It Like It Is

We woke up Monday Morning in Jerusalem to find that the New Orleans Saints had, beyond all expectations (except those of a certain Astrologer) won the 2010 Superbowl against the seemingly unbeatable Colts. In honor of the triumph of our Cajun friends we're going to play some Aaron Neville music tonight ... but first ...

We're telling it like it is! An interesting discussion regarding the juxtaposition of Rebbe Nachman's Tikkun HaKlali with rock n'roll ensued this morning via Lorelai's Facebook Page. What sparks flew! We enjoy trading opinions (each Jew has at least four on any given subject) and even barbs, but b'ezrat HaShem, it's all in the spirit of goodness and exhortation.

Today's schedule includes new music brought to us by our friends Shaul David Judelman and Moishe Pesach Geller. Thanks for the hook-up, guys! We're also featuring a wonderful Torah by Rebbetzin Rena Richman who continues her "Bat Melech" series with an in-depth teaching on Devorah the Prophetess, and a special teaching from Rabbi Chaim Richman on the Priestly Garments (which if Lorelai had named the program it would have been called "What the Well-Dressed Cohen Wears" - but that's why he's the rabbi and she's clearly NOT).

Today's Torah Schedule:
2pm - Rena Richman's "Bat Melech" - Devorah the Prophetess
3:30pm - Rabbi Chaim Richman "The Priestly Garments Part 1: To Make and To Wear"

Today's Music Schedule:
8am - 1pm Lorelai's Morning Dew for the Morning Jew Show
1pm - 6pm "Israeli Soul" Afternoon features new music (thanks Shaul & Moishe!) from In Lakech, Sasha Rose Butterfly's "Creation Song" CD and Northwestern U.S. Wedding Band Superstars (led by Shaul's brother Keith Judelman) Sasson.
6pm - "Betten Gav" Chillaxation Hour features Peter Paul & Mary - very chill!
7pm - Billie Holiday "Lady Day" the Columbia Records Collection - sweet!
8pm - New Orleans' Favorite Son Aaron Neville - favorite picks, both solo and duets
9pm - Creedence Clearwater Revival - Bayou Country and Mardi Gras
10:30pm - The Allman Brothers Beacon Theater Concert from March 2009 (getting ready for that great show again this year, only NOT at the Beacon - stay tuned for more news as it develops).

Comfort Music

Comfort music ... that's what the doctor ordered, and that's what Steve and Lorelai delivered during their "Sunday Night Live" Show, with special guest Shaul Judelman. Everyone agreed that acoustic guitar music has an especially soothing effect, and just to prove it, Steve played The Allman Brothers "Tied to the Whipping Post." Oh well. At least we all felt better after that.
So why the picture of John and Yoko? Because comfort is more than one's physical surroundings of mind, it's about being surrounded by the embrace of total acceptance - as so poignantly illustrated by John Lennon's embrace of his wife Yoko Ono. How many of us get that kind of enveloping welcome in this lifetime? Radio Free Nachlaot is here to give you a taste of what it's like to be welcome in this world. We're playing your comfort music by request into the wee small hours of the morning, when we'll be back to business as usual with Lorelai's "Morning Dew for the Morning Jew" Show. Until then lay back, close your eyes and listen to The Grateful Dead at Boston Music Hall (1976) and other comforting musical offerings as the night turns from deep darkness into morning once again...

Iron Lion Zion - Shabbat Shalom!

Bob Marley's birthday falls out on Shabbat (Saturday, February 6th) this year. Slip into Shabbat Parshas Yitro with Bob Marley and David Grisman, Andy Statman and Jerry Garcia. It's raining, cold and cloud-covered here in the Holy City of Jerusalem. Many of us are hunkering down at least for the night in view of weather and such - and some of us have must-attend simchas for which we must brave weather both foul and fair. May our moods be fair even if the weather may feel foul to some - but to those who truly love Eretz Yisrael and Yerushalyim in particular, the damp cold never felt so sweet, as it brings cleansed air, drink to the parched ground and promises of brachas to come. May the Torah flow like the waters from heaven above - Shabbat Shalom to everyone far and near from Radio Free Nachlaot, Your World-Wide Neighborhood Radio Station.

Shlomo and Nina

Shlomo said that Nina said that there are only two people that have rhythm!

Let's head to Shabbos with a combo of performances by Nina Simone and Shlomo Carlebach - recorded at the Village Gate -plus Shlomo Torah to boot!!
Right Now - 1:00 AM , and again Friday at Noon --
Good Shabbos, Good Shabbos
Cookin' with Steve has been on a low - flame this evening, but I think we're starting to boil a bit -after all, it's Thursday Night, and time to prepare for Shabbos -- so, let's just see where we go -
Good Shabbos, everybody!

Gevaldt, it's Moishe & Lorelai LIVE On-Air Today - Mamash, The Highest!

"The Decemberists" (as Rabbi Chaim Richman likes to call us) are back in business! Yes, our beloved friend Rabbi Moishe Pesach Geller is freshly arrived from a 4+ month stint in Schmutz L'Eretz (California, specifically) and he'll be LIVE IN-STUDIO with Lorelai, today at 3:00 pm - right here! You can be sure when you get two like-minded Sagittarians together, add merriment, music and a microphone it will make for some world-class radio fun. When Steve and Lorelai started Radio Free Nachlaot, this is exactly the kind of thing they dreamed about - "playing radio" with our friends,  family, loved ones, teachers, musicians, healers, and all the amazing personalities we know and love here in Jerusalem! We've been privilege to hang out on-air with so many amazing people - Harvey Milstein, Liebe Schulman, Oneg Shemesh, Rabbi Chaim Richman, Betzalel Phillip Edwards, Moshe Newman, Leah & Rena, Shulie and her Abba ...This is what we call Our Dream Come True.
Lots of Rain Music today continuing through this afternoon's LIVE with Moishe & Lorelai Show - then after that, stay tuned for the rest of today's schedule - and tonight STEVE LEVINE takes over with a very, very VERY special edition of his Cookin' for Erev Shabbos Show!

The Day The Music Died

February 3rd, 1959 - "The Day The Music Died" - sent Lorelai musing about musicians who died in airplane (or helicopter) crashes on their way to gigs. The list is somewhat staggering ... Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Ricky Nelson, Otis Redding, Aaliyah, Jim Croche, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Patsy Cline, John Denver, Glenn Miller ... all represented in one way or another this morning on our "Morning Dew for the Morning Jew" Show.

Does airborne transportation have a particularly inherit vortex-like quality for the young and talented? Is there a reason their spirits left their bodies when they were flying, Icarus-like, so close to the Sun? We can't answer these questions, only pause to remember and enjoy the fruits of their lives - the music they left behind. The creative urge is how we mere humans are the most G*d-like, and how we grasp for immortality while still strutting & fretting our hour upon the stage of life.

Legendary concert promoter and impresario Bill Graham also lost his life while airborne - in a helicopter crash we're not entirely sure wasn't engineered by Dark Powers who wanted to stop him from testifying before Congress on the subject of Corporate concert ticket monopolies - and in tribute to him we're playing a lot of music later tonight from The Byrds and The Grateful Dead.

Today's Torah Schedule:
1pm and 5:45pm - Rabbi Betzalel Phillip Edwards' Series on the Piasetzner Rebbe continues
3pm - Rabbi Chaim Richman's Series on The Moshiach and The Holy Temple (Part 3) continues

Genius Loves Company

February 2nd may be famous for being Groundhog Day, but at Radio Free Nachlaot we're celebrating the birthdays of two legends - one of whom is living and the other one who is technically "dead" but whose ideas, characters, philosophy and raw spirit lives on far past her "expiration date."  This morning on Lorelai's "Morning Dew for the Morning Jew" Show we were treated to an entire long set of interviews, music and sound clips dedicated to the 105th birthday of philosopher / author / misunderstood female Ayn Rand. Born 105 years ago today to an assimilated Jewish family in St. Petersburg on the eve of the Russian Revolution, Ayn Rand suffered the double indignities of being smarter than anyone else in the room (no matter where the room was or who was in the room) and subjected to the small-mindedness of "Muggles" (mere mortals) who neither cared to think for themselves nor allow those more qualified to think for them. After escaping Communist Russia & landing in the U.S. without a single word of English nor a kopeck to her name, she went on to become a screenwriter, best-selling author and living legend. "Atlas Shrugged" has sold more copies of any other book in publishing history except for The Bible. Think about THAT!
Conversely, it's also the birthday of musical legend Graham Nash. A founding member of Crosby Stills Nash (and Young), Graham Nash has given the world a musical legacy of beauty, grace, pain, exaltation and spiritual transcendence sure to outlast his own lifetime (it should be a long, healthy one). Plus, he was Joni Mitchell's boyfriend during their mutual youth - which sends him off the cool-meter, in our book.

Today's Torah Schedule:
1:00 pm & 5:45pm - Rav Betzalel Phillip Edwards series on the Piasetzner Rebbe continues
4:45 pm & 8:00pm - Rabbi Chaim Richman's Parsha Shavua - YITRO, baby! Can't believe we're already in Yitro again!

Today's Music Schedule:
1pm - 6pm "Israeli Soul" features Oneg Shemesh and RebbeSoul (Bruce Burger) BOTH of whom are playing TONIGHT in Jerusalem at the Canaan Bar (15 Shamai Street in Jerusalem) Show starts at 9:30pm - Bruce is playing with one of our favorite bands, HaMakor, and Oneg is opening for them. It WILL be a Gevaldt!

6pm - Bluegrass Sessions! Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Vince Gill - unbelievable!
8pm - CROSBY STILLS & NASH - THE ENTIRE FREAKING 4-DISC DISCOGRAPHY! Should run until almost 1am ... enjoy!
