Poems, Prayers and Promises

Poetry is the essence, the concentrated dense elemental stuff that dreams are made of, and everybody knows that on some level it's the Poets who are keeping the blood of this world pumping through our collective hearts. Tehillim (Psalms), the sublime poetry of King David, is the archetype for all poetry - expressing hope, fear, faith, anguish, betrayal, exaltation, doubt, decisiveness, loneliness, love and the whole range of human emotions as filtered through the lens of HaShem's  Providence and Grace. Poets are our theme today on Radio Free Nachlaot, and we're paying tribute to two of the greatest musical poets of our lifetime - Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell.

OK, it's true that Leonard Cohen IS Jewish, dafka. Joni isn't on a technical level but nothing is more Jewish than spinning the hay of suffering into the gold of poetry, and nobody does that better than Joni, which makes her music as Jewish as "Hava Nagila."

Perhaps it's the impending Dark of the Moon which drives the programming today. As the energies of Shvat are poured into the waiting vessel which is Adar we shift from Air to Water, from intellect to feeling, from the personal to the universal ... and back again, round and round we go! Next week will feature special AstroloJew programs from Lorelai to celebrate Rosh Chodesh Adar and the renewing of the soul, being poured out like water ....

Today's Torah Schedule:
  • 1pm - Rabbi Chaim Richman's new piece "An Altar of Earth" Debuts
  • 2:45pm, 7:45pm, 9pm - Rabbi Chaim Richman's Parsha Shavua "Mishpatim"

Today's Musical Schedule:
  • 8am - 1pm Lorelai's "Morning Dew for the Morning Jew" show starts off, as always, with the very essence of Poetry and Prayer - Rebbe Nachman's "Tikkun HaKlali," and continues throughout the morning with songs of poetry, prayers and promises.
  • 1pm - 6pm : "Israeli Soul" Afternoon's theme is "Locals We Love - The Poets" and  starts off with three extraordinary new songs from Dani Meir Maman, and continues with the music of Aharit HaYamim, Meirah Miriam Bet-Dovid and David Dome.
  • 6pm - Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell! Selections from Leonard Cohen's "Live in London" Show and Joni's epic "Court and Spark," acknowledged by all as the apex of her singer/songwriter phase.
  • 8pm - Dave Matthews Band The Central Park Live Concert (2003). Dave Matthews is a poet in his own right and his voice blends right in to the cry of poets throughout the generations in love, anguish, longing, joyfulness and intimacy.
