Master of Wars

"HaShem, Master of Wars is His Name..."

When HKBH is on our side we know we're in the hands of the true Master of Wars. He teaches our hands to war and our fingers to fight - how so? With the bowstrings of a harp, with fingers on ivory keys, with drum and timbrel and electric guitar - we triumph over our enemies - primarily the internal ones - via music of praise and passion.

Therefore ... We're starting our evening at 7:15pm with some Bob Marley. "One Love Peace Concert," (1978) followed by "Chant Down Babylon" (1999). No one fought the entrenched intractable status quo like Bob Marley, and no one did it with more sweetness or passion.

George Harrison, Ravi Shankar, Bob Dylan, Leon Russell, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Badfinger, Ali Akbar Khan. Just a few blokes getting together with 40,000 of their closest friends to try to save a suffering country. THE CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH - 9pm Jerusalem Time tonight...
they believed music could change the world, and that G-d was on their side...almost 40 years later, we have to reflect...they weren't so very wrong about that, were they?

...and at 10:30pm we'll go to OUR own shtetel ... Anetevka. "Fiddler on the Roof" (the original Broadway recording) will take us back to our ROOTS.

Speaking of roots, at 11:30pm we'll hear the Grateful Dead 100 Years Hall. It don't get more rootsy than that, yo!

Let's let the Master of Wars fight our battles, we'll be playing Him music...

Sunday Night Live!

Yes folks, it's Sunday Night, already, and you know what that means!
Lorelai and Steve will be LIVE from Studio B with tonight's special guest:
Chanan ben Ami.
Chanan will tell us all about himself and his musical journey and even play some songs - assuming the mics don't crackle too much, and the upstairs neighbor doesn't get too cranky, the motorcycles outside don't raise too much cain, and we are able to produce some sort of audible representation of the fun i know we'll be having.
We almost invited Jah Levy and Shimshy and the whole "accoustic" reggae gang to come on by, but i think we'll save Jah Levy for Saturday Night - Live from the Khan...
oh my, so much to do, so little time --
Soundcheck?
ok, after we hear some Leon Russell and some Billy Joel - now that we've heard Elton John and John Lennon....we'll be ready to go.
Join us, won't you?

All that Sunday Jazz

We've got Jazz, Jazz and more Jazz - at least until 3PM

Chick Corea and Return to Forever with Flora Purim and Airto,
Chick Corea and the Elektrik Band,
McCoy Tyner plays Duke Ellington,
and then, Duke Ellington's Great Paris Concert
all leading up to a "shot of Shlomo" (around 1:30 pm).
sounds like the making of a nice Sunday to me!
...and don't forget - tonight at 8:00 PM,
Sunday Night Live with Lorelai and Steve and our special guest - Chanan Gans.
Don't you miss a beat!

Shavua Tov, and btw - they say it's your birthday!!!

Shavua Tov - Chodesh Tov -
and Happy Birthday John Lennon.
Where else do you find a Melave Malke turn into the celebration of life we sometimes call a birthday party!
And, in fact, it could be that a Melave Malke is a birthday party -- Dovid Hamelech, every Motzoei Shabbos when he realized that he was still alive had a Seudah to thank HKBH for yet another week of life (he knew he was going to die on Shabbos, so if he made it to Motzoei Shabbos he knew he had another week) -- and maybe we too, when we make it to Motzoei Shabbos, knowing that Shabbos brings down the holiness for the whole week, need to celebrate life. And John, although he was shot down at 40, he's now 70, and through his music he certainly lives on... hey -- through his music Kind David lives on as well -- maybe there are more similarities than meet the eye -- and did I forget Shlomo? Through his Torah and his music he certainly lives on.... what a celebration -- Melave Malke, Shlomo, John -- hey, maybe it's like it says in Instant Karma -- "and we all shine on, and on, and on...." So, let's gather around folks, right here on Radio Free Nachlaot, and tonight, let's celebrate life, and let us all "shine on, and on, and on.....!"

Open the Flood Gates

Whether we find ourselves in the "Wake of the Flood" or "Before the Deluge", just know there is a "light at the end of the tunnel" (and not an oncoming train) - just know there is a "pot of gold" at the end of the rainbow, (and not "brown gold - coffee") -- Just know that the "darkest hour is just before the dawn" and that it's not only Friday - almost Shabbos, but it's Rosh Chodesh -- and there IS nothing to worry about!

We've got Music, Talk and Torah on the Radio, and songs about water and floods coming up all afternoon. We will have our Noon Time "Shot of Shlomo" and our "Not for Kids Only" Childrens' Hour (1:00 PM) - today featuring songs by Susan Salidor (Songs in the Key of Chai) and Yaakov Yisroel (Jim) Costello (Rittenhouse Square) and the Israeli Classic - "The Lion, the Dove, and the Blue Hen." Of course, Jerry will meet Shlomo on the road to Shabbos, 'cause where and when else do you meet good people except when you're walking (or swimming) down a good road.

Good Shabbos, Good Shabbos, Good Chodesh, Good Chodesh, and in the words of Bill Cosby (quoting the Lord ) --

"How long can YOU tread water?"

. . . And How Was YOUR Broadcast Day?

Some days start out the night before, as in this one, which really began around 2am Thursday morning when Lorelai woke up and realized she had no Internet (no Internet= no Internet Radio) and that Steve was planning on throwing the broadcast stream to her at 9am. She went back to bed with a plan - to call HOT, the Israeli Cable TV service provider, exactly at 8am when their "Customer Service" telephone center opened.

After a series of badly bi-lingual irate and tearful phone calls (one which left her on hold for a total of 26 minutes) a technician appeared by 11am and VOILA, we were back in business by Noon, when Steve threw the stream over & Dr. Liebe Schulman showed up to do her "HOLY HEALING" show (which, of course, was a huge success and available for Download from our Download Page .

So really, in the words of Alfred E. Neuman (who, we discovered this week, was a secret kiruv agent for the Lubavicher Rebbe!): "What? Me Worry?"

So we didn't worry when we played Torah from Chaim Richman this afternoon, or the recording of Bill Cosby's "Noah" comedy routine - heck, it's THE time of year to play that one, early and often this week!

We didn't even worry (much) when we announced we were playing Miriam Makeba's "Queen of African Music" album and one of our Facebook Friends went off on a diatribe about Miriam Makeba being married to Stokely Carmichael a.k.a. Kwame Ture, a notorious anti-Semite. No consolation that they separated in 1973 and then divorced, we were suddenly the bad guys. A heated discussion of artist as an artist vs. artist politics/personal life ensued. But we still didn't worry.

Tonight we broadcast live from the first "Regular" Rebbe Nachman Thursday Night Chebura that we've had since before Rosh HaShannah, when Rav Ozer Bergman (and 70,000 of his closest friends) went to Uman.

In fact, this is the first "regular" week we've had since the Chaggim began - we had Reb Moishe Geller on (for a few minutes, at least) our Sunday Night Live Show, Benzion on Monday, Maya (or at least we TRIED to have Maya - darn digital files from hell!) on Tuesday, "Homegrown Hour" on Tuesday night, Dr. Liebe's Holy Healing at Noon on Thursday and Rav Ozer Bergman's Rebbe Nachman class on Thursday night - that's a pretty regular week so far!

And tonight starting at 11pm - What? Me Worry? Of course not - Steve Levine is Cookin' for Shabbos - if that's not comfort food, I don't know what is!!!
