"Rolling Stone, Wanna See My Picture on the Cover, Wanna Buy 5 Copies for my Mother, Wanna See my Smiling Face on the Cover of The Rolling Stone!"

Sorry to kvell in public but I'm a little verklempt!!!

In an attempt to spread the word about Radio Free Nachlaot's upcoming mega-event "The 9 Days of Jerry," Laurie Anderson, VP of Public Affairs at the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau, has forwarded our 9 Days of Jerry Press Release to Ben Fong-Torres of Rolling Stone Magazine!

Ben! Ben Fong-Torres! I remember you when you were just a little "cub" reporter, back in The Day - and when I was a Journalism student at San Francisco State University from 1976-78 (under the tutelage of the legendary Tom Johnson and before I made the drastic and life-altering decision to transfer to USC, and of course known then under a completely different name: Lori E. Lieberman) and was an Intern for the Center for Investigative Reporting (now known as "Muckrakers") in Oakland. You were one of my heroes! You also were pretty nicely portrayed in the movie "Almost Famous" - Ben, Oh Ben, PLEEEEEEESE read and report on our 9 Days of Jerry Press Release, nothing would make me happier!!! Better yet, jump on a plane from San Francisco & come right away to Jerusalem and sit in with Steve and I during The 9 Days of Jerry so we can reminisce together about the Good Old Days of the San Francisco music scene! YOU ARE OFFICIALLY INVITED!!!

Too Old To Rock n'Roll, Too Enmeshed in the Money Machine to Die?

It's Tu B'Av day, or is that "The Morning After?" Ladies, did you wear white and dance in the vineyards outside of Jerusalem's walls last night? Have new z'vugiim (couples) been formed overnight? Has love reigned supreme or did the full moon catch you by surprise? We want to know.

It's also the 67th birthday of Mick Jagger as well as the 20th anniversary of the death of Grateful Dead keyboardist Brent Mydland. Mick is like the Energizer Bunny of Rock n'Roll, he just keeps going and going ... while Grateful Dead keyboardists ("The Cursed Position") drop like flies - Pigpen, Keith Godchaux (whose 30th yartzeit was this past Shabbat), Brent Mydland ...

We can only speculate about why some live forever - in some cases, long out-living their own relevance - and some don't live long enough to fulfill their potential. Perhaps the reason Mick keeps going and going is because the money-making machine he created - the Rolling Stones, who invented the idea of "merchandising" (they were nearly broke until someone came up with the idea of putting their logo all over cheap clothing items, cups, notebooks, etc. and the Rock & Roll Merchandising Industry was born, turning their fortunes around and creating a whole new cash flow portal for bands - can't afford for him to die?

Or maybe all those old chestnut rumors about Mick selling his soul to the devil were true after all. We won't know until the Last Act of this crazy play.

We're playing The Rolling Stones' "Get Your Ya-Ya's Out" and "Sticky Fingers" at 8pm tonight. Mick, if you're listening, don't forget to go to bed early tonight, you'll need your sleep!

At 10pm we're playing the Grateful Dead 3/29/90 at Nassau Coliseum featuring Brent Mydland on keyboards.

Season 2 Debuts: "IT'S ALIVE! IT'S ALIVE!"

We're celebrating life "Big Time" here at Radio Free Nachlaot this morning! Lorelai's got the reigns of this wild horse & we're galloping at full speed towards ... the river? Did I just hear Talking Heads singing "Take Me To The River?"

Yes you did, and so did all our listeners - we're baaaaaaaaaaack with music, music, music this morning on the very first "Morning Dew" Show of Season 2.

But of course, that's not all - far from it! Our New and Improved Format started yesterday afternoon with our Live Kick-Off during which we announced the upcoming 9 DAYS OF JERRY Event which we'll be talking about more soon - suffice to say that from August 1st (Jerry's Birthday) to August 9th (the anniversary of his death) we're going to pull out ALL the stops and give you a Jerry-Fest like you've never, EVER had before! Stay tuned for more details in coming days!

But what about today? But what about the rule that says never start a sentence with the word "but" and yet we've done it twice already? We're a little giddy now that Tisha B'Av is well behind us and we can turn our attentions to other things - like being happy.

Of course when I write "we" I mean at this point ME (Lorelai), because Steve is experiencing a little lag time - the Shloshim for his brother Seth ends on Shabbos Nachamu. He's still a little subdued - although the joy at being able to go back to music yesterday was quite palpable - he's still not giving it 100%, he's holding back a bit - but you just WAIT people, wait until Steve feels free to give it all he has - then you'll find out what Rockin' the Free World is really all about.

Today's Radio Free Nachlaot Schedule:

9am - 11:45am - "Morning Dew for the Morning Jew" - Lorelai's Eclectic Morning Mix of Songs features a tribute to Birthday Boy Rick Lieberman (Lori's father - yes, Lori is Lorelai and also Chaya Yocheved, that's a whole other stories of multiple identities gone wild) and you'll hear some Frank Sinatra l'kavod Dad's 79th Birthday, along with Bruce Springsteen, Melissa Etheridge, Blanket Statementstein, Sublime, Cowboy Junkies, Talking Heads, Steven Earle, Joni Mitchell, The Spin Doctors, Stevie Wonder, Ani DiFranco, Amy Winehouse, Simon & Garfunkle, The Byrds, the Grateful Dead and more.

11:45am - 1pm: Happy Birthday Don Henley of The Eagles - we're playing The Eagles Live in Concert (1980) - some sweet, sweet songs from one of our favorite California bands!

1pm: Parsha Shavua Va'Etchanan from Rabbi Chaim Richman

1:10 - 2pm - Music from the Kirtan Rabbi

Tonight's Shiur is sponsored by Laya Scholar in honor of the end of the Shloshim for Shaul Avrohom Eliezer ben Shmuel Aryeh-Leib - Seth Levine, who's Shloshim ends on Shabbos Nachamu. May we all be comforted with the mourners of Zion and Israel, amen v'amen.

9pm: LIVE from THE KHAN OF THE WHITE DONKEY IN TZFAT - Amir Perelman & Avshalom Farjun (founder of Bustan Avraham) in a special duet performance of Mediterranean World Music. Don't miss it!

Wake up people!!! It's 9am Jerusalem time on July 22nd - that can only mean one thing - The Season Two Debut of Lorelai's "Morning Dew for the Morning Jew" Show!

Rolling Stone Magazine calls Lorelai's show "The only thing worth getting up for in the morning."

Vanity Fair has lauded the Morning Dew show with the following praises: "The coolest, hippest show on Internet Radio and the only show that we know of that may play Frank Sinatra and Sublime within the same set - and somehow it all makes sense."

Mother Jones Magazine says: "We've dug deep within the archives of every possible search engine and we can't find any scandal regarding Lorelai's "Morning Dew" Show although there may be a number of unsavory items in her personal past including but not limited to a close encounter with Microsoft co-founder and eccentric Billionaire Paul Allen but we can't prove anything so we'll do what we always do - simply start rumors. But the show IS well worth listening to."

Al-Jezerra says: (translated from Arabic) "If everyone in the greater Pan-Islamic World listened to Lorelai's "Morning Dew" Show it's an undisputed fact that there would be peace on Earth instantly."

Tisha B'Av 5770 in Jerusalem

Sometimes it's a fine line between what's happening on Radio Free Nachlaot and what's happening in the lives of Steve, Lorelai and the rest of our chevre here in the Holy Land and other places on this big old planet.

It's Tisha B'Av 5770. We've played an entire 9 Days worth of Shiurim by some of our favorite Torah Teachers, and have pulled out all the stops today. Just keep Radio Free Nachlaot on in the background - you've literally got nothing better to do today if you're in the hot Jerusalem sun without water or food until after 8pm tonight (OK, sometime between 8:14 and 8:24pm, depending on where you "hold"). You'll be hearing Shiurim from Rabbis Chaim Richman, Avraham Sutton, Ozer Bergman, Betzalel Phillip Edwards, Benzion Eliyahu Lehrer, Sholom Brodt, David Aaron, Yaakov Shapiro, Avraham Union, Moshe New, Nissan Mangel, and the very special Rebbetzin Rena Richman ("Bat Melech"). Interspersed throughout these Torahs will be a-Capella sacred songs by Avraham Sutton to soothe your tired and possibly dehydrated soul.

We'll continue with this programming until early Wednesday Afternoon, when Lorelai and Steve will kick of "Season 2" of Radio Free Nachlaot - LIVE - WITH MUSIC - oy, the relief will be palpable!

This morning Lorelai joined a group of fellow Jews - Israeli Passport / Teudat Zechut - holding Jews of the visibly religious persuasion - on the Temple Mount - Har HaBayet, the holiest place on Earth and The Place ("Ha Macom") where the Mother of All Klipot (shells or husks of impurity) has taken up residence & is holding all the Holy Sparks captive. You can see pictures of this trip as well as videos on Lorelai's Facebook Page , where it is written:

This year I really GOT why we go to the Mikveh & wear non-leather shoes to go up to the Temple Mount, & how important it is to fervently pray before-hand. The Place is being held captive by The Mother of All Klipot, & the tuma is so thick you can cut it with a knife. We arm ourselves in the energetic, spiritual realm but our numbers are few & our biggest enemy is disunity amongst our own People. HEAVEN HELP US.

Yes dear friends, fans and Radio Free Nachlaot listeners - Heaven WILL help us, you can be sure. Radio Free Nachlaot is doing whatever we can to bring all of us together using music, Torah and our original programming to do so. We believe in YOU. Stay with us, won't you?

Erev Tisha B'Av 5770

It's been a long 9 Days, hasn't it? In fact, this entire 3 Weeks period since the 17th of Tammuz until today has seemed to drag on endlessly. We've had an all-Torah/all-Talk/no-Music programming schedule since Rosh Chodesh Av, and we're pulling out all the stops during these final days and hours of Tisha b'Av 5770 - with the sincere hope that this time next year finds us rejoicing in the rebuilt Holy Temple in Jerusalem instead of mourning for it, over and over again.

The most common theme we've found this year seems to be the feeling that the mourning process has somehow become entrenched and institutionalized throughout the Galut (which isn't a surprise) and even here in Eretz Yisrael (which is both unexpected and disappointing). The "Oy Vey Iz Mir" mentality has become part of "business as usual," but is this really Good For The Jews? It's our opinion that the answer is a resounding NO.

So what's the solution, what's the antidote for this poison of resigned melancholy which has become almost systemic within a large segment of our People? Should we not, all of us, take our very lives and souls into our own hands and determine with all our might to DO THE MITZVAH as commanded in the Torah? Are we waiting for our Sukkah to drop down from Heaven or is the Mitzvah to build ourselves a Sukkah? We're commanded to build the Holy Temple and each day we make an excuse as to why we're not building it is another day gone by without the Holy Temple in this World, another day gone by when the Jewish People both here in the Land of Israel and outside of Israel are NOT DOING THEIR JOB.

What is our job, exactly? To be a light unto the nations, to spread Torah from Jerusalem to the World, and to create the physical and spiritual infrastructure that makes both these things possible. We can't be a light while we're in darkness. HaShem - Master of the Universe! Open our eyes to Your Truth! Open our hearts to Your Holy Word! Remove the shame of our disobedience, turn our stony hearts into hearts of flesh & put as You promised a new Spirit within us so we can DO OUR JOB. Give us the strength, courage and wisdom we need and give us leaders whose hearts are turned only to You.

Did you have a vision of the Holy Temple on Shabbos Chazon? If you did we want to know about it. Don't forget you can always send us emails at radiofreenachlaot@gmail.com - we love to hear from you.

This afternoon's Torah Schedule is as follows ....

11:30pm - Rabbi Yaakov Shapiro's series on Parenting continues
12:45pm - Lorelai's interview with Avraham Sutton
1:45pm - Rav Ozer Bergman's Rebbe Nachman Shiur from June 24th

5:30pm - Rav Ozer Bergman's Rebbe Nachman Shiur from July 15th
6:20pm - Avraham Sutton "Awareness in the Amidah"
8pm - Avraham Sutton "Inner Space"

Stay tuned for more programming updates - we hope to have either a live reading of Megillat Eicha or a recording of it being read this evening - and we (and by "we" I mean me, Lorelai and a host of other people) are, b'ezrat HaShem, going to ascend Har HaBayet tomorrow morning at 7:30am - stay tuned for recordings made on the spot there, interviews with people who have come to pay their respects to the Shechina, and much, much more as we come closer and closer to .... the end? The beginning? Both????

Day 5 of The 9 Days, The Ari's Yartzeit & Shabbos Parsha Devariim

Last night began the yartzeit of Rabbi Isaac Ben Luria, the Holy Ari'zel.

Chabad.org records the following:

Rabbi Isaac Luria Ashkenazi, known as
Ari HaKadosh ("The Holy Lion") passed away on the 5th of Av of the year 5332 from creation (1572 CE). Born in Jerusalem in 1534, he spent many years in secluded study near Cairo, Egypt. In 1570 he settled in Sefad, where he lived for two years until his passing at age 38. During that brief period, the Ari revolutionized the study of Kabbalah, and came to be universally regarded as one of the most important figures in Jewish mysticism. It was he who proclaimed, "In these times, we are allowed and duty-bound to reveal this wisdom," opening the door to the integration of the teachings of Kabbalah--until then the province of a select few in each generation--into "mainstream" Judaism.

It's a comfort to have the Holy Ari's yartzeit in the midst of the 9 Days, and we had a wonderful live class last night with Rav Ozer Bergman which he began with several tales of the Ari. If you missed it you can download it and hear it (over and over again!) from our DOWNLOADS Page - check it out!

Today's Schedule:

11am: Avraham Sutton's exclusive interview with Lorelai Kude 11:30pm Betzalel Phillip Edwards Piacetzna Rebbe Series Part 6 11:45pm: Avraham Sutton "The Mysterious 130 Years,"
1:15pm - Betzalel Phillip Edwards Piacetsna Rebbe Part 7
1:30pm - Rabbi Yaakov Shapiro's series on Parenting
3pm: Repeat of "Sunday Night Live" with Steve & Lorelai featuring an exclusive interview with Rabbi Chaim Richman
5pm: Lorelai's continuing conversation with Benzion Eliyahu Lehrer on the mysteries of the Jewish Calendar

You'll be hearing intermittent acapella singing of Sacred Songs recorded by Avraham Sutton throughout the day and leading into Shabbos. May we all be encouraged and take heart together as we strengthen ourselves and our chevre in faith, Torah and love. Good Shabbos! Good Shabbos!

Don't forget we're OFF THE AIR for Shabbos - see you Moetzi Shabbos sometime after 9-ish.

Shabbos is coming! Shabbos is coming!

Yes, it's already Yom Ha-Shishi - Shabbos is coming, Shabbos is on its way --
So, what's on the radio you say? to what will I be working my way up to Shabbos?
Well here's the plan -
Duke Ellington's Great Paris Concert 'til noon'ish
Rabbi Chaim Richman on Parshas Matos-Masei at 12:10 - to be followed by the Art Ensemble of Chicago featuring Lester Bowie - then some free-mixing (that's what we call it when we still don't know what we're going to play) until 3:30 -- when we will bring you the Radio Free Nachlaot "not for kids only" Children's Hour -- which still goes for about and hour and half - but kids don't do math...
today's kids show will feature music from the Smithsonian Folkways Childrens Album and from Walt Disney's Jungle Book -- and then we're going to Shlomo and Jerry - it till Shabbos --
of course all music is being tastefully selected within the spirit of the "three weeks" and Steve's Shloshim period - but you know, erev shabbos is like a "spiritual free zone" -- even in a Shiva house the mourners can "get up from shiva" in enough time to prepare for shabbos.
so, how do you prepare for shabbos? how do we here at RFN prepare you and us for shabbos?
we play Jerry and Shlomo and go down the road feeling so glad that Shabbos is coming -- ok, so we may not be dancing down the road during these "end of tamuz" days, but a smile and a skip can't be stopped - if you know what i mean. Even the hottest Chamsin has to break.....
and so, the slow build to tisha b'av will continue during the 9 days - and we will have plenty of special programming to fit even that "mood" -- but, not for today. today all we have to say is that Shabbos is coming, Good Shabbos, Good Shabbos.
what did he say???
Shabbos is coming, hooray, hooray!!!!

Today's Concert Special

Today is July 5th -- and in the U.S. today is the end of the Fourth of July Weekend -- what better way to celebrate the 4th (on the 5th) than to play Johhny Cash's last concert, recorded July 5, 2003.
So, that 's exactly what we're going to do -- at 11:00 PM J'slm time (or 4pm NY Time, or 2 PM in California) we're going to play Johhny Cash's last concert.
Happy 5th of July, everybody!

Hold on I'm Comin' - Hold on, I'm Back

(steve speaking) I'm back in Jerusalem, The holy city of Jerusalem, my home sweet home --
..and I think I'm going to blues and jazz myself back into reality -- I really need to process all that has gone down - and what better a place to process reality than right here on Radio Free Nachlaot! You know what they say, together we can tackle anything - together we can take on the world - alone - ya aint got a chance.....
I've been comforted as a member of the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem by all my family and friends - words and good wishes, tears and hugs - but now i think the music (muted as it might be -- shloshim/3 weeks and all) needs to do its magic on my soul - on all our souls - cause u know -a little jazz and blues, it can't hurt - can it?
Playlists will be announced but meanwhile, we have some Miles Davis, The Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper and some McCoy Tyner already in the queue.
Stay tuned - IT's A NEW WORLD, PEOPLE -- everyday is a new day -- Praise the Lord!
c ya on the radio!

Homeward Bound

In honor of Steve's impending homecoming (could it be today?) we're playing all "Home-Themed" songs - after doing a search of our music library we discovered over 20 hours of songs with the word "home" in them - but don't worry, we won't play all 20 hours!

The best of the homecoming songs will be featured this morning on the "Morning Dew for the Morning Jew" Show - and stay tuned for what's on board for the afternoon and evening - if Steve gets back in time and he's not too tired, I'm pretty sure he'll want to get back on the radio ASAP - so in the meanwhile - safe travels to everyone "on the road" this day, and don't forget: There's no place like home! Sweet home Yerushalyim - Sweet home Radio Free Nachlaot - YOUR home-away-from-home on the Internet.

Goin' Down the Road Feeling - like Shabbos is coming, Shabbos is coming!

"The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say."

- JRR Tolkein

Never, Never, Never, Never EVER Give Up!

In this week's Torah Portion (Pinchas), the Daughters of Tzelafchad faced a social, spiritual and bureaucratic dilemma.

After their father died in the desert, the existing societal structure denied them as women an inheritance in the Land of Israel. Their desire for the Land of Israel and to have a portion of their own was so strong that they defied social norms of that time, surmounted the bureaucracy and made their way to Moses with their request.

Moses presented the case to G-d. G-d said to Moses, “The daughters of Tzelafchad have a just claim. Give them a hereditary portion of land alongside their father’s brothers.”

What's the moral of the story? That it pays to be a Nudnick? That even though G-d Himself set up the structure of the Tribes and the inheritance laws He actually WANTED a woman to challenge them so He could amend them to show His justice and His mercy?

Maybe all this and more - maybe it's a reminder to us that we must never, never, never, never EVER give up when we know what we want is right, even if the institutions and structures in our society which SEEM to be "set up" by G-d tell us otherwise.

We must like the daughters of Tzelafchad be willing to suffer the bureaucratic process. The established judicial system of their time consisted of a hierarchy of judges (over groups of 50, 100, 1,000, etc. much like our "Local/Regional/Federal" judicial systems).

The daughters of Tzelafchad had to approach judges at every level, each one referring the matter to higher authorities, until their case finally reached all the way to Moses. Tzelafchad’s daughters were willing to try to overcome such a seemingly impossible obstacle to receive their portion of the Land of Israel, for which they longed exceedingly - enough to risk ridicule and rejection.

Don't give up. EVER.
