35:21:56

35 Hours, 21 minutes, 56 seconds. That's how much music is contained in Rolling Stone Magazine's Top 50 Albums of All Time. We've selected one song from each of the 50 albums and we're going to play them - in order! Starting a little bit after 10am this morning.

That's the Top 50 out of the Top 500, by the way! We don't necessarily agree with Rolling Stone's choices (four Bob Dylan albums and only one Beatle album in the top 50?) but hey - we work with what we've got.

This afternoon we'll hear Torah from Rabbi Chaim Richman on the Parsha Shavua "Chayai Sarah" at 2pm, followed by Parsha Poetry on Chayai Sarah by the amazing talented Chaya Kaplan-Lester.

Our Israeli Soul Afternoon music features Shoshanna Harari's "Traveler's Prayer" and music, stories and Torah from Reb Shlomo Carlebach (of course!).

At 5pm we'll have some Torah on Berashis from Dov Laimon. Yes, we're still in Berashis- "Genesis" to the Hebraically challenged - and we like to linger there, at the beginning of all things ... but time marches on, doesn't it? Let's get into it while we're into it - together!

What Do You Want From Life?

What do you want from life ... ??? How about more peace, love, joy and happiness? That's what we'd like more of too , which brings us to our programming day here at Radio Free Nachlaot.

It's Tuesday, and we miss Maya. She's off on a whirlwind tour of record stores on other continents, and she's promised to come back with great new music to play on her usual Tuesday "Maya in the Morning" Show ... hurry back Maya! We can't wait to see what gems you've dug up!

We had a classic episode of Lorelai's "Morning Dew" Show this morning (you had to be there, we really can't explain in mere words what that was like but suffice to say if you started out in a bad mood you didn't end up that way. "Guaranteed to Change Your Head!").

Today on "Israeli Soul Afternoon" we're featuring:

  • 1pm: Rabbi Chaim Richman on Parsha Chayai Sarah
  • 2pm: Moshe Newman on Shlomo Carlebach
  • 3pm: "Light Unto the Nations: For He Desires Kindness"
  • 5pm: Our interview with Mindy Ribner

Interspersed between all this great Torah is music from Moshe Newman ("Hareni Mikasher Atzmi"), Noah Lublin ("Leaving Egypt"), RebbeSoul ("From Another World") and Shoshanna Piano ("Gifts From Heaven.")

At 6pm we'll hear the ultimate diva, Barbra Streisand and the Motion Picture Soundtrack to the classic "Funny Girl." Seriously, it's really great. You'll find yourself singing along!

7pm: HOMEGROWN HOUR!!! We've chosen new music from JudaBlue and Jimmy (Ya'akov Yisrael) Costello.  We'll hear selections from JudaBlue's "Forty Days" and Jimmy Costello's newest recording, "Going Up (Maalim b'Kodesh").  We think you're going to like what you hear - a LOT!

At 8pm we're counterbalancing yesterday's CSNY concert with their solo work. Between 8pm - 11:30pm we'll hear David Crosby's "It's All Coming Back To Me Now," Stephen Stills 2005 release "Man Alive," Graham Nash's "Wild Tales" and Neil Young's "After the Goldrush."

Which brings us to 11:30pm - our normal time to hear Grateful Dead or Dead-related music ... so in the spirit of what we've been listening to so far - ladies and gentlemen: The Planet Earth Rock & Roll Orchestra - the P.E.R.R.O Sessions.

Really, that's a lot of great music. What more do you want from life? More love, joy, peace and happiness? Or a baby's arm holding an apple? You decide.

Sweet Yehudi Blue Eyes

It's the 17th of MarCheshvan, the day the Flood began upon the Earth in the days of Noah. I'm still not wearing socks - afraid to jinx the suddenly crisp weather. Yesterday two out of three weather widgets on my iPhone predicted rain in Jerusalem on Friday and Saturday, although today they're only predicting clouds on Friday and possible rain on Saturday. Feeling less like Elijah and more like his servant who kept checking to see if he saw any clouds. So when I had the privilege of spending a few minutes with my beloved rabbi, Chaim Richman, I had to ask: what do you think I should play tonight on the radio?
He looked at me, deep into my eyes, and sighed. "You know what you really don't play enough of? You know what this world needs more of? Crosby, Still, Nash and Young."

Then he sat me down and made me listen to a version of "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" that sounded like a rehearsal tape - you can hear David Crosby exclaim, "Beautiful!" at the soaring harmonies got just right - truly a sweet, sweet version of the song.

I knew he was right, and I knew why in particular CSNY NEEDS to be played tonight: to help bring rain upon our drought-stricken world. There isn't enough beauty in this world. CSNY bring down beauty and beauty is like rain ... let the deluge begin, my friends!

On the Road to Shabbos

Yes, it's almost Shabbos, again! Good Shabbos, Good Shabbos.
and don't forget -- Motzoei Shabbos, Saturday Night - Shlomo meets Shlomo - It's Shlomo's Yahrzeit and we're going to Celebrate his life -- Music, Torah, Talk -- including some special guests -- M"S - Rabbi Betzalel Edwards, and Sunday 1:30 PM 'ish - R' Shlomo Katz.

Endless Summer, a Spoon Full of Sugar and a Whole Lotta Torah

It's October 20th and it'll be above 90 degrees Fahrenheit today in Jerusalem... AGAIN.

Lorelai feels there's nothing good to say about this. Steve is trying to focus on the extended growing season and how that might be a blessing for farmers. Which explains the basic point-of-view difference and why you won't hear Showtunes on Steve's shows but will on Lorelai's - counter-intuitive, we know - but it works well.

In light of the present reality, Lorelai is playing some Mood-Altering Music until 1pm, then Chaim Richman on Parshas Vayera, music from Shoshannah Piano, 2pm: Tzedaka Adventures with Arnie Draiman, music from HaBanot Nechama, 3pm: The Attribute of Anger Part 2 from Chaim Richman, music from Akiva Gersh, 4pm: Rebbezin Rena Richman's "Bat Melech" Series "Avraham Was One," music from Seth Breitman and Shir Yaakov Feinstein-Feit, 5pm: the debut of Dov Laimon shiur series - starting with Bereshis ... and then it's very likely we'll hear music from Mary Poppins, just trying to decide between Original London Cast Recording or Disney Movie Extended Version.

Oy, the choices!
When will this Endless Summer ever end?

You Had Me At SHOWTUNES!

Tonight at 10pm Jerusalem Time we're playing Barbra Streisand's "Funny Girl" on the (formal?) debut of the "You Had Me At SHOWTUNE!" Show (subtitled either A) The Supercalifragisticexpialidocious Show OR B) "Not For Drag Queens Only" ). Which subtitle do you like better?

What could be more ... entertaining? Especially after the jam-packed days we've had Monday and Tuesday - we need a little Broadway, baby!

Tonight we'll also be featuring the Grateful Dead from October 1st, 1971 - a rehearsal show featuring Keith Godchaux, in commemoration of this day in musical history - October 19th, 1971 - which was the first time Keith ever played in public with the Dead. That's coming up at 11pm, Jerusalem Time.

So whatever way you cut it, if you're listening on headphones in your office you should be sure to control the Diva-dial on your music-meter during Streisand ... and the swaying & holding up of lighters during the Grateful Dead.

It's Tuesday - there must be a guest coming!

And, yes, it's true - Tuesday is becoming "live" guest in the studio day -
and I guess a "live" guest is better than the alternative.
5:00 PM - Melinda "Mindy" Ribner will be our guest. We all know Mindy from years of being part of the "shlomo chevra" - now it's time for the rest of the world! Mindy is Beit Miriam - go to the website and check it out: www.beitmiriam.org, and listen to us right here and let's get to know Mindy, together.
7:00 - 8:00 PM - Homegrown Hour - you can send us your samples at Radiofreenachlaot@gmail.com

Sexual Healing is MORE than a Marvin Gaye Song! Lorelai Meet Rabbi Melinda Bernstein LIVE Tonight on Radio Free Nachlaot!

Tonight on Radio Free Nachlaot we're going where we've never gone before...a little bit outside our normal comfort zone.

We say about ourselves that we're Radio Free Nachlaot, a place big and safe enough for different streams of Jewishness ... You've heard our rap before, we often say RFN is "where shaved-head hilonim meet shtreimels, kippah sugah meets black hats and everyone lives together in tie-dye harmony...."

Well, now we can really put that to the test! How so, you ask? Well, a very special person is going to visit Lorelai live at Undisclosed Studio A tonight around 7:30pm - Rabbi Melinda Bernstein, founder of the Temple of Tantra and Judaic Studies in Del Rey, Florida. She's in Jerusalem as a featured speaker at the Jerusalem International Integrative Conference this week and we've invited her to come by and share about her work.

From her web site (www.holisticrabbi.com) :

The mission of the Temple of Tantra and Judaic Studies is to bring together all those who wish to explore the universal spirituality and vast wonders of Judaism, Kabbalah, Energy Healing, Kundalini, Yoga and other forms of spiritual enlightenment that are extensions of, yet consistent with, our Judaic values. It is our mission to bring together the teachings and lessons of these long-standing traditions of thought and ideals in an enlightened environment that will allow us to raise our levels of spiritual self-awareness and physical well-being.

Specifically (as far as can be discerned from what we've read about her) Melinda works with modalities of  "Sexual Healing," which (as far as we can tell) means more than just a Marvin Gaye song. Many people (if not most) have been wounded sexually as children or young adults, whether through (G-d forbid) sexual abuse or molestation, rape or unwanted sexual energies that modern society does not equip us to deflect and reject. Certainly there's a lot of healing that needs to be done on that level. Not to mention the inherit power of sexual intimacy - which can be deeply transformative and healing - or, used incorrectly and with the wrong intentionality - deeply wounding and harmful. Rabbi Melinda has something to share with us on these topics and, we suspect, even more.

A note to the large segment of our audience who are Orthodox or Orthodoxically inclined... Don't let the title of "Rabbi" throw you, either. "Rabbi" means teacher. On Melinda's web site she says she's been Reform and Orthodox, and has found a path that both encompasses and transcends. The point of our visit isn't to debate whether or not there is such a thing as a female rabbi - clearly different streams of Judaism hold differently on that - the point of our visit is to meet with an accomplished, deeply caring woman who has done a tremendous amount of work on a very important subject and deserves our respect and attention. Don't get hung up on the labels - this could be a good time to get rid of labels and just to experience what it's all about. She's a TEACHER. Maybe we could learn something!

Well! We DO have a lot to talk about, don't we? Join Lorelai live from Undisclosed Studio A around 7:30pm Jerusalem Time tonight to find out more and help her welcome Rabbi Melinda to Jerusalem and to Radio Free Nachlaot - let's make it a respectful, safe and welcoming place to hear about her journey, her work, and let's see if we can learn from each other ... that's what it's all about anyway, right?

We are Back!

Actually, we never went anywhere at all! It's just our Server over there in an undisclosed location in England went "down" and there was nothing we could do. I'm sure our prayers and the quiet chanting of "We want our Radio Free Nachlaot" was what did it!
Ok - we're back - and will recover our schedule in some fashion or another...
Every moment life is re-newed. Aint it the truth!

Our SC-4 Broadcast Server is Down - But Are We Worried?

Monday Morning and suddenly - our SAM Broadcaster isn't broadcasting - after some troubleshooting we discover our SC-4 Server which is located somewhere in an undisclosed part of Europe is offline! Our Streaming Service provide (Streaming Pulse) informs us that they're working on it and hopefully we'll be back up and running SOON. Meanwhile - as Alfred E. Neuman says: What? Me Worry? Nah.

We've got a whole lot of great programming for you today - much of which was supposed to be LIVE - but hey, we're Radio Free Nachlaot, which means we have to turn on a dime and go to Plan B when necessary - or Plan C, or whatever! So stay tuned for updates - and hopefully within a very short time we'll be back up and running for you!

Cookin' for Shabbos? It must be Thursday night!

It's already Shabbos, can you believe it?

Did you get all the shopping done?

Are the kids asleep? Are the dishes done?

Did you kill all the bugs with Avraham's "Frangrance of the Ketoret" Spray?

Are you ready to Cook for Shabbos?

Well, you know I am! Improved sounds all around - not just on the microphones, but also in the headphones -- hey, we even sound better on our little computer speakers, and why? 'Cause we waited for the man, and he fixed the darn thing.

So now all that's left is to provide you with the soundtrack for your thursday night, or as we used to say, ROCK YOU ALL NIGHT LONG!

So, without further ado - let the show begin.

And so it will, anytime after 10PM until 1, or 2 AM, it's Cookin' for Shabbos - right here on RFN.

Are We Slip-Sliding Away or Are We On The Verge of A Musical Healing?

What a treat to have Dr. Liebe Schulman in-studio with us live today at 12 noon! Not only is Liebe a "Holy Healer," she's also (amongst too many other things to mention here) an accomplished recording artist whose lifelong love affair with the banjo is accredited with saving her life upon multiple occasions.

Today on "Holy Healing" we discussed SAD (Seasonal Affectation Disorder) which is what happens to over 10% of the population of any given climate (with the notable exception of Iceland where they ingest massive amounts of Omega 3-rich fish) when the days start to get dark early.

What can you do? Exercise, eat a lot of Omega 3-rich fish like Salmon, Mackerel and Sardines, get a full-spectrum light box (or at least a light bulb), go outside into the sunshine as much as you can - and of course - LISTEN TO BANJO MUSIC. It's a scientific fact that you can't be sad while listening to banjo music! And Dr. Liebe reminds us that when we get sore from too much yoga or exercise, ARNICA is the answer (sub-lingual tablets under the tongue or Arnica creme).

We've had an exciting day so far and much of it was off-radio ... a really wonderful friend came to Steve's "Undisclosed Studio B" location this morning to tweak, tune & adjust our audio settings to help get the snap, crackle, pop out of the mics there - and from what we heard, the effects are MAHHHHVALOUS, darling ... we'll know more later tonight when Steve takes back the stream for his "Cooking for Shabbos" show...
... but so much going on before that! We also interviewed Tzedakah Adventurer Arnie Draiman which we'll be playing our recording of today and in days to come (and you can listen to it on our DOWNLOAD PAGE, oh yes you can!) Arnie is the head of Draiman Consulting and a real pro - get to know him and his work, he's one of the real "make a difference" people here in the Holy Land!

So what else is going on for Thursday? So much!!!

1pm - 2pm: Simon & Garfunkel Live in Central Park
2pm: Rabbi Chaim Richman on Lech L'Cha
2:15pm: Laura Liebe Schulman's Banjo Masterpiece "Pretty Little Dog"
3pm: Rebbetzin Rena Richman's latest "Bat Melech" - "Avraham Was One"
3:20pm - Reb Shlomo! Music, Torah and lots of Gevaldt Love!
4pm: Arnie Draiman's Tzedaka Adventures!
4:15pm: More Reb Shlomo (a double shot!)
5pm: Rav Ozer Bergman's Rebbe Nachman class from last Thursday
6pm: The Best of the Best of the Week - Lorelai's picks for outstanding musical highlights from this week
7:30pm: LIVE with Rav Ozer and the Thursday Night Rebbe Nachman Chebura!
9pm (or maybe a little earlier?) - Steve's Cookin' for Shabbos Show!

Really, where else do you get this kind of programming? I'll tell you where - NOWHERE. Only on Radio Free Nachlaot - who loves you, baby?

Still Crazy After All These Years

American-Jewish Singer/Songwriter Icon Paul Simon is 69 years old today! No one of a certain age (and even younger, if the truth be told) has been untouched by Paul Simon's work from the 1960's until the present day.

As the other half of Simon & Garfunkle he brought beauty (of course, he's a Libra!) and grace into the sometimes rough-edged world of folk music and took "folk" to a whole new level and beyond.

As a solo artist he brought humor, pathos and insight into the rock world - he was one of the first mainstream (white-skinned) superstars to support and record what we now call "World Music" when he started exploring the music of South Africa with his album "Graceland" and Brazilian sounds with "Rhythm of the Saints."

The winner of 13 Grammys including the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Lifetime Achievement Award as well as an inductee (2001) into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Paul Simon was the first recipient (2007) of the Library of Congress's Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.

But hey - despite all the honors and fame, Paul Simon is still crazy after all these years. We love him like a rock. And we're going to play a lot of his music today.

Today's Schedule:
9:10am - 10am: Paul Simon in Concert
10am: Bob Dylan "Desire"
11am: "Ladies Morning" Featuring music from Patsy Cline, Billie Holiday, Amy Winehouse, Bonnie Raitt, Ella Fitzgerald and Etta James. Not "just" ladies - REAL WOMEN.
1pm - Parsha Shavua "Lech Lecha" from Rabbi Chaim Richman (repeats at 7:45pm)
1:30pm: Music from HaBanos Nechama
2:10pm: Music from Neshama Carlebach
3:10pm: Music from Holly Shere ("Wild Earth Shebrew")
3:40pm: Music from Sasha "Butterfly" Rose ("Creation Song")
5pm: Dr. Liebe Schulman's "Holy Healing" Class from October 7th
6:10pm: Music from Meirah Miriam
7:45pm: Parsha Shavua from Chaim Richman
8pm: PAUL SIMON IN CONCERT! Selections from the best of the best of Paul Simon (live and in-studio)

...Don't forget - the nearer your destination the more we're slip-sliding away. But Radio Free Nachlaot is your bridge over troubled water - we will ease your mind!

Master of Wars

"HaShem, Master of Wars is His Name..."

When HKBH is on our side we know we're in the hands of the true Master of Wars. He teaches our hands to war and our fingers to fight - how so? With the bowstrings of a harp, with fingers on ivory keys, with drum and timbrel and electric guitar - we triumph over our enemies - primarily the internal ones - via music of praise and passion.

Therefore ... We're starting our evening at 7:15pm with some Bob Marley. "One Love Peace Concert," (1978) followed by "Chant Down Babylon" (1999). No one fought the entrenched intractable status quo like Bob Marley, and no one did it with more sweetness or passion.

George Harrison, Ravi Shankar, Bob Dylan, Leon Russell, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Badfinger, Ali Akbar Khan. Just a few blokes getting together with 40,000 of their closest friends to try to save a suffering country. THE CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH - 9pm Jerusalem Time tonight...
they believed music could change the world, and that G-d was on their side...almost 40 years later, we have to reflect...they weren't so very wrong about that, were they?

...and at 10:30pm we'll go to OUR own shtetel ... Anetevka. "Fiddler on the Roof" (the original Broadway recording) will take us back to our ROOTS.

Speaking of roots, at 11:30pm we'll hear the Grateful Dead 100 Years Hall. It don't get more rootsy than that, yo!

Let's let the Master of Wars fight our battles, we'll be playing Him music...
