As per our minhag in recent years, we'll be off the air for the 9 Days between Rosh Chodesh Av (Friday, July 13th) and Tisha b'Av, returning to our 24/6 broadcast schedule after the Fast.
This year the Fast of Tisha b'Av is delayed because of Shabbat, so it is observed on Sunday, July 22nd. The fast ends at 8:12pm Jerusalem time. Because it's actually the 10th of Av, we'll be starting the radio back up sometime later that evening - stay tuned & Steve will let us know exactly when.
Don't forget - Radio Free Nachlaot's 9th Annual 9 DAYS OF JERRY begins Wednesday, August 1st! We'll run until Shabbos begins, Jerusalem time, on Friday August 3rd, and we'll be off for "Shabbos Jerry" until Saturday evening, August 4th. We'll go strong all week long bringing you the best of the legacy of Jerry Garcia until Friday, August 10th ("Isru Jerry").
As we've done the last few years, RFN's 9 Days of Jerry launches our annual donation drive! You can start NOW by supporting our "GO FUND ME" CAMPAIGN (see the top of this page or CLICK HERE). We'll be asking for your support right up until Rosh HaShanah or we meet our (extremely modest) goal of $2000 for this year!
Streaming the best music, talk and Torah 24/6 from an undisclosed location, deep inside Nachlaot - Jerusalem's coolest neighborhood - to the World!
Nachlaot is the Greenwich Village / Haight Ashbury of Jerusalem - rhymes with "rock the boat, skin the goat"

Matisyahu Day on RFN
![]() |
| Matisyahu with Steve Levine, Jerusalem 2011 |
We're honoring Matis today on RFN for the high road he took when BDS bullied Rototom Sunsplash into demanding he alone of the dozens of artists make a political statement in order to play. He declined. They cut him from the bill. Antisemitism in the very last place it should be - the musical community. We are officially disgusted.
We find it offensive that not a single one of the dozens of other artists were asked to make a political statement in order to perform at the Rototom Sunsplash Festival in Spain. Only the Jew. We find it offensive that the organizers of Rototom caved to BDS activist demands to single out the only Jewish performer to be examined for his politics. We find it offensive that other artists were not informed of the actions of the Rototom Sunsplash organizers and didn't have the opportunity to protest or to stand with Matisyahu; many of them didn't even hear what was happening until it showed up on social media.
This was Matisyahu's statement today:
"The festival organizers contacted me because they were getting pressure from the BDS movement. They wanted me to write a letter, or make a video, stating my positions on Zionism and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to pacify the BDS people. I support peace and compassion for all people. My music speaks for itself, and I do not insert politics into my music. Music has the power to transcend the intellect, ideas, and politics, and it can unite people in the process. The festival kept insisting that I clarify my personal views; which felt like clear pressure to agree with the BDS political agenda. Honestly it was appalling and offensive, that as the one publicly Jewish-American artist scheduled for the festival they were trying to coerce me into political statements. Were any of the other artists scheduled to perform asked to make political statements in order to perform? No artist deserves to be put in such a situation simply to perform his or her art. Regardless of race, creed, country, cultural background, etc, my goal is to play music for all people. As musicians that is what we seek. - Blessed Love, Matis"Our revenge? MUSIC, and lots of it.
We'll be playing a lot of Matisyahu and a whole lot more of the best Jewish, Israeli, and World Music as well as the best classic rock, and of course, Reb Shlomo, and the Grateful Dead - all right here on Radio Free Nachlaot - broadcasting live 24/6 from Undisclosed Studio B Jerusalem (with a satellite studio "A" in Berkeley, California).

August 1st - HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JERRY!
![]() |
| "Jerry Garcia" by Ocean Clark |
It's August 1st, the 73rd anniversary of Jerome John "Jerry" Garcia's birth in San Francisco, California.
It's the beginning of Day One of Radio Free Nachlaot's 6th Annual celebration of Jerry Garcia's life, music, and legacy - The #9DaysofJerry!
Because of Shabbos being on Saturday, August 1st, we didn't get started until kind of late - but that doesn't matter, because we're going to keep going all the way through the 9DOJ into "Isru Jerry" and beyond!
This year we've decided to break down the #9DaysofJerry by era - beginning at the beginning!
Today, Day#1, we're focusing on the Grateful Dead 1965 - 1968 to include shows from: Avalon Ballroom 10/12/68, Vancouver 7/29 and 7/30 1966, Winterland 3/18/67, and later Sunday afternoon we'll play some early Jerry - with Robert Hunter from 1961 and with the Sleepy Hollow Hog Stompers in 1962, and a whole bunch more.
Believe it if you need it, and need it if you dare!
Keep tuned to Radio Free Nachlaot during the #9Daysof Jerry to hear everything very, very Jerry, 24/6 - plus some new surprises!

"Sunday Night Live" - Calling Bullshit on the BDS Movement, Live from Berkeley!
Well, it was bound to happen.
As you know, Radio Free Nachlaot's co-founder and Programming Director Lorelai Kude journeyed from Jerusalem to Berkeley a couple of months ago, where she's been staying in the "Peace Room" and investigating what she calls "The Knee-Jerk Reactionary 'Liberal' Heart of Darkness," otherwise known as the notorious anti-Israel, antisemitic activism that goes on in the Bay Area.
L'kavod the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. Day in America, our "Sunday Night Live" Show will be broadcast LIVE FROM THE PEACE ROOM in an undisclosed location in Berkeley and feature Lorelai's recent "Heart to Heart" series of interviews exposing the hypocrisy and moral bankruptcy of the BDS Movement ("Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions"), which in it's quest to align itself with legitimate causes has deliberately and disingenuously co-opted the narratives of the Native and Indigenous Peoples as well as that of other historically oppressed groups such as African-Americans, the GLBT community, and more.
For background and insight into the sly, manipulative use of terms such as
"redwashing", "pinkwashing" and "greenwashing" by the BDS Movement and
how the red, pink and green Peoples are fighting back, demanding the BDS
symbol-usurpers to take their hands off narratives that don't belong to
them, read Wendy Kenin's piece in the Times of Israel, and prepare yourself for "SUNDAY NIGHT LIVE FROM THE PEACE ROOM" - 7pm Jerusalem time on Sunday (that's 9am Pacific / 12N Eastern on Sunday, January 19th).
We'll be playing Lorelai's "Heart to Heart" (a Mitzvah Media Production for Radio Free Nachlaot) interviews with Blogger and Native/Indigenous activist RYAN MERVIN BELLEROSE, South Africa-based academic and Native/Indigenous activist JAY CORWIN and Institute for Black Solidarity Founder DUMISANI WASHINGTON.
Prefacing the following with a big, fat "l'havdil" - Just as Rebbe Nachman insisted on being buried in Uman, which he called "the Jaws of Hell" so that his Neshama would serve as a merit and a protection for the Jewish People exiled in the Ukraine, Lorelai feels that the time she spends in Berkeley should be spent inserting herself into the California version of "the Jaws of Hell" ("Berkeley, the Knee-Jerk Reactionary 'Liberal' Heart of Darkness") in order to extricate the truth from the outrageous lies that are being told as if they were actual fact (which, of course, they're NOT).
Another small but important point here - Radio Free Nachlaot has always been what Steve and Lorelai like to call "family friendly programming," and although one of Lorelai's worst midot (character traits) is her propensity for using swear words and foul language (something she's been WORKING ON very hard to correct since starting RFN together with Steve, from whose lips no one in living memory has ever heard a curse word issue), her use of the word "Bullshit" in her "Heart to Heart" series "Calling Bullshit on BDS" is deliberate. Because there's a time and place for 'language' and this is the time, and this is the place. "Bullshit" is a term that denotes complete falsehood, and if anyone deserves to have "Bullshit" called on them, it's the BDS Movement, which has done harm to Israel and the Jewish People by spreading lies as if they were fact, and usurping the struggles of other Peoples illegitimately while using every means possible to discredit, marginalize and isolate Israel from the world community.
So ... it's not swearing. It's using the term "bullshit" responsibly and accurately.

Arik Einstein - YOU AND I WILL CHANGE THE WORLD Ani Ve Ata אריק איינשטיין - אני ואתה
ISRAELI MUSICAL LEGEND ARIK EINSTEIN DIED LATE TUESDAY ...
Lorelai's thoughts on the loss of one of the Reshonim of Israeli music -
Mourning Arik Einstein is also an experience of mourning an Israeli that exists only in memory - my Israel of 1974 and 1976, my Israel where there was only one TV station (which played IDF-Meets-Jack LaLane style calisthenics every morning in black and white), where the sound of feet crunching sunflower seeds beneath sidewalks was part of the hum, where a flock of sheep crossing the street in Jerusalem routinely stopped traffic, when a bathroom was a "Beit Shemush" and not a "Sherutim." My Israel that reached from Metulla and Rosh Hanikra to Sharm El Shech, when laying beneath the starry desert sky at Dahab was both safe and normal, when a walk through the Arab Shuk via Jaffa Gate promised bloody goat body parts hanging from hooks at every turn, when Mamilla was a respectably shabby slum instead of a glittering retail installation.
A more innocent time and place, look for it no longer, for it exists only in memory - and on video, and captured recordings - luckily for us.
What hasn't changed since the '70's is how much Israelis love Arik Einstein.
Israelis love to sing. They sing in what would be to the average American male, an almost embarrassingly uninhibited way, while doing normal things - walking down the street, driving a bus or a taxi, sorting mail, sweeping the sidewalks, etc. etc. Israeli men in particular are touching in this manner - especially the burly and testosterone-endowed amongst them, G*d bless them and thank you Ribbono Shel Olam for creating this particular strain of Israeli. The guy just sings to himself, going about his business.
There's not one amongst them that doesn't sing "Ani v'Ata" as part of his everyday repertoire. With the possible exception of Naomi Shemer's "Yerushaylim Shel Zahav" and of course, "Hatikva," there isn't a more iconic song for Israelis than "Ani v'Ata." In fact, may I venture to say that "Ani v'Ata" is to Israeli culture what Alaynu is to the Orthodox liturgy. Can't get through the day without it. It's in our blood.
Bibi Netanyahu nailed it when he said Arik's music was the soundtrack of our lives.
Arik died Erev Chanukah. Let's remember his light - the light of the Reshonim of Israeli music - like the Chanukah candles, will grow in brightness forever. You and I will change the world.

... and of course really, it goes without saying but I'll say it anyway: listen to us 24/6 at www.radiofreenachlaot.com - because Nachlaot is not JUST a neighborhood: It's a State of Mind.

Tovia Singer Interviews Rav Avraham Sutton! 5pm Israel time "Wildcard Wednesday" - "Na Nah Nachin' on Heaven's Door" - Torah from Nachlaot!
Well, I know you're asking yourself - how does either Tovia Singer or Avraham Sutton come under the category of "Torah from Nachlaot"?Both qualify for that category, and that's why we're airing Rabbi Tovia Singer's recent interview with Rav Avraham Sutton on the "Wildcard Wednesday" episode of our new "Na Nah Nachin' on Heaven's Door: Torah from Nachlaot" show!
5pm Israel time you'll hear Avraham Sutton take Tovia Singer into INNER SPACE - and they're going to take you there too!
So, what's the connection?
Rav Avraham Sutton frequently teaches at Yeshivat Simchat Shlomo in Nachlaot, run by Rav Sholom Brodt and Rebetzin Judy Brodt.
Both Rav Sutton and Tovia Singer have been related to Radio Free Nachlaot since our earliest days - Lorelai made the original "shidduch" between Tovia and Rav Sutton when RFN first began broadcasting,
... and of course whenever Tovia is shopping for Shabbos, there's nowhere he likes to be more than Machanae Yehuda Shuk, buying freshly baked challot and the freshest salmon for his famous Shabbos Sushi.
So there you go. Another great Torah show at 5pm Israel time. Because you know we're all about the best music, talk & Torah 24/6 from Israel to the World - and even though we're triangulating a lot lately (first Tzfat, then Berkeley) our HOME, our ANCHOR LOCATION, is always and forever in Jerusalem, and thank G*d, Baruch HaShem, Steve Levine & Family are anchored to Yerushalyim and Undisclosed Studio B will always "B" THERE - no matter where Undisclosed Studio A roams!

Nah Nah Nachin' on Heaven's Door: Torah from Nachlaot!
Hey people! We're working on Radio Free Nachlaot's
new programming. We'll be adding "Nah, Nah, Nachin' on Heaven's Door:
Torah from Nachlaot" during our "Israeli Soul Afternoon" show (1pm - 6pm
Monday - Thursday) with selections from Yeshivat Sulam Yaakov and others.
Some of it will be entirely in Hebrew (for instance a Rebbe Nachman shiur by Rav Raz Hartman ), some will be in English.
Please note that simply because Lorelai can't resist a pun (i.e. "Nah Nah Nachin'") that does NOT mean that the programming will be entirely Breslov or even entirely Rebbe Nachman-oriented. We love Rebbe Nachman and he will get his fair share, and since he's a Tzadik he won't mind sharing the programming time with other Tzadikim.
These new Torah shows will be presented at 5pm Israel time Tuesdays and Thursdays. Listen and learn!
Another programming note: We'll be airing "Temple Talk" featuring Rabbi Chaim Richman and Yitzchak Reuven of The Temple Institute every Thursday at 5pm Israel time (a change from our previous time of 7pm so please make a note!) as well as Rabbi Richman's Parsha Shavua Thursdays at 1pm Israel time.
Radio Free Nachlaot: The best music, talk & Torah 24/6 from Nachlaot, Jerusalem's coolest neighborhood, to the world!

Sukkot - Living On Faith!
So it really feels like one thing after the other, right? Rosh HaShannah, Yom Kippur, and now: Sukkot - one of our favorite holidays, the one where we bring our insides out - literally. Moving into our Sukkahs reminds us how temporary anything passing for "security" really is. We live in "booths," that is to say, flimsy structures which, no matter how tastefully decorated or sturdily built, are inherently temporary. Just like our lives - and all we have to do is just live in the Sukkah for a week, living on faith, believing that HKBH is the only real security we have in this life!
We'll be off the air for Chag haSukkot beginning Wednesday night until Thursday night this week. We'll be back on the air Thursday night until we're off the air Friday night for Shabbos again! Gevaldt, one thing you can say for the Month of September (Tishrei as it happens to be this year) is that our computers are getting a lot of rest!
Chag Sameach everybody - enjoy your time in the Sukkah and see ya on the radio!

Yom Kippur on Shabbos - The Shabbat Shabbaton!
A wonderful calendar confluence- Yom Kippur falls out on Shabbat this year, making it a "Shabbat Shabbaton," the Shabbat of all Shabboses, the highest and holiest day of the year.
We'll be eating manna, the food of angels - we'll be wearing white, we'll be so close to the World to Come that we'll be tasting it and breathing it - and we invite you to meet us there, between the Cherubim, where heaven and earth kiss and make up, where all our hurts are healed and we are assured of our acceptance, forgiveness and restoration with both G*d and our fellow humans.
We're broadcasting special Yom Kippur-themed shiurim and music today as we lead up to about 6pm Israel time, when we'll be off the air until Moetzi Shabbos - Saturday Night - when we'll switch it up to bring in the joyous time immediately following Yom Kippur - join us, won't you?
Have an easy, meaningful and redemptive fast - "Tzom Kal" - and G'mar Chatimah Tovah, you should be written in the Book of Life - signed, sealed and delivered for a health, happy, peaceful and productive New Year!
