We're asking our friends, families, fans, listeners, guests and random lovers of music, Israel and the Grateful Dead to please give us the GIFT OF LIFE!

RFN's 7th Annual 9 Days of Jerry Coming in August (Right After Tisha b'Av)!
#9DOJ
"We're not the best at what we do, we're the only ones who do it."
No other internet radio station plays 9 solid days of all Jerry and Jerry-related programming every year for 7 years, adjusting programming start dates to align with the halachic imperatives of the Jewish calendar!
Radio Free Nachlaot's 7th annual 9 DAYS OF JERRY begins Sunday night, August 14th, after 11pm Jerusalem time and continues unabated and unabashedly through the end of Tuesday August 23rd, breaking only for "Shabbos Jerry" (this year Parshat Va'etchanan).
Because 5776/2016 is the 19th year of the 19 year Metonic Cycle, silly. :)
We will be off the air from Rosh Chodesh Av (August 5th) through the end of Tisha b'Av - then starting up again full-throttle with the 7th Annual 9DOJ!
Gevaldt!

August 1st - HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JERRY!
![]() |
| "Jerry Garcia" by Ocean Clark |
It's August 1st, the 73rd anniversary of Jerome John "Jerry" Garcia's birth in San Francisco, California.
It's the beginning of Day One of Radio Free Nachlaot's 6th Annual celebration of Jerry Garcia's life, music, and legacy - The #9DaysofJerry!
Because of Shabbos being on Saturday, August 1st, we didn't get started until kind of late - but that doesn't matter, because we're going to keep going all the way through the 9DOJ into "Isru Jerry" and beyond!
This year we've decided to break down the #9DaysofJerry by era - beginning at the beginning!
Today, Day#1, we're focusing on the Grateful Dead 1965 - 1968 to include shows from: Avalon Ballroom 10/12/68, Vancouver 7/29 and 7/30 1966, Winterland 3/18/67, and later Sunday afternoon we'll play some early Jerry - with Robert Hunter from 1961 and with the Sleepy Hollow Hog Stompers in 1962, and a whole bunch more.
Believe it if you need it, and need it if you dare!
Keep tuned to Radio Free Nachlaot during the #9Daysof Jerry to hear everything very, very Jerry, 24/6 - plus some new surprises!

Looking Back, Looking Forward! Our "Citizen Journalist" Reports from Santa Clara & Chicago
What hasn't been written yet about the "Fare Thee Well" shows? From articles about how aging Deadheads are more Republican than Democrat, from heartfelt paeans penned by authentic 1st GenHeads to smarmy little pieces written by people who weren't even born when Jerry died - the world of print journalism has hit the mother lode this summer with all things Grateful Dead. Looking back at the "Fare Thee Well" shows for a moment, before looking forward to Radio Free Nachlaot's 6th Annual 9 Days of Jerry, this is our two cents.
1) We are neither dead, nor grateful. For those of us still lucky enough to be in the land of the living, we've forgotten one of the basics - "Give me five, I'm still alive, ain't no luck, I learned to duck!" Everybody who is STILL HERE needs to be a little bit more freakin' grateful about it, and stop kvetching about how things "aren't the same". Of COURSE they're not the same. Neither are YOU. Think about it.
2) It's still a Long, Strange Trip - and it ain't over yet. If we're still alive, then we're still truckin', even if we're calling in our performance or suffering the occasional rain day shutout. If we learned anything from the "Fare Thee Well" experience, it's that we're still a family - even with Uncle Jerry gone these last 20 years. So we don't have the same kind of family reunions we used to have, without him - but we still love to get together.
3) We're Old but not quite In The Way. 1st Generation Deadheads Jim and Patti Stein traveled to Chicago from Berkeley, California for the "Fare Thee Well" Chicago shows (after having seen both Santa Clara shows the week before). Jim gallantly agreed to be our "Citizen Journalist" on the go, and filed the following reports from both Santa Clara and Chicago, which we aired live on Radio Free Nachlaot during the "Fare Thee Well" week, but now are available in archived form to enjoy again.
About Jim Stein: Jim Stein is based in Alameda, California, a large island in San Francisco bay where he lives with Patti and their son Mitchel. Jim's Deadhead Cred comes from the 200 or so West Coast Dead shows he attended with friends from 1976 to 1987. "I took my retirement in advance," Jim says about his touring years. "You could catch a dozen per year in the Bay Area, so averaging around 20 per year was no problem" Children and a job slowed things down but he still manages to catch at least a few shows with the surviving members every year. In his "real" life, Jim does technical work for Peralta Colleges TV and KGPC radio in Oakland, tends a large vegetable garden and tries to make it to a heavy metal show "about once a year."

WOW, WE SCORED!!! Our Interviews with MICKEY HART, CRYSTAL MONEE HALL and Incredible Records Founder JONATHON LIPSIN Sunday Sept. 1st at 7pm Israel time!
Friends - We're still HIGH from the MICKEY HART BAND
concert in Jerusalem which took place at the magical, magnificent
amphitheater venue on Jerusalem's Mt. Scopus, overlooking the Judean
desert all the way to the Dead Sea.
Undoubtedly it was the concert of a lifetime for Israel-based Deadheads, who welcomed Mickey Hart, the first member of the Grateful Dead ever to play in Israel (and, by the way, also the first and so far only Dead member to play in both Egypt AND Israel!).
Undoubtedly it was the concert of a lifetime for Israel-based Deadheads, who welcomed Mickey Hart, the first member of the Grateful Dead ever to play in Israel (and, by the way, also the first and so far only Dead member to play in both Egypt AND Israel!).
The revelation of the evening was Tony Award-winning vocalist CRYSTAL MONEE HALL, who embodied Shechina with her amazing voice, bringing it down and giving it over like it's never been done before!
We'll
be airing our exclusive interviews with both Mickey Hart and Crystal
Monee Hall on Radio Free Nachlaot's "Sunday Night Live" show Sunday,
September 1st at 7pm Israel time.
This is "appointment listening," people! Tune in to hear Steve and Lorelai live from Undisclosed Studio B in Jerusalem,
discussing the concert in-depth and playing both interviews, both of
which will later be available for download from our web site.
"Sunday Night Live" on Radio Free Nachlaot will also feature Lorelai's interview with Jonathon Lipsin, founder of the legendary Incredible Records,
who flew into Israel from Switzerland for the Mickey Hart concert and
has been hanging out in the Holy Land for a couple of weeks.
Jonathon Lipson has more music industry stories to tell than there are
ears to hear them in the entire human race. This man is like the Forest
Gump of the music industry - the likes of Paul Robeson and Pete Seger
were regulars at his parents dinner table in Toronto where he grew up
"a red diaper baby," secular Zionist turned Israeli soldier,
entrepreneur and founder of what Leonard Cohen called "The Greatest Record Store in the World."
Read more about Jonathan Lipson in this article about the closing of his store after 30 years,
and listen to our interview with him on "Sunday Night Live," Sunday
September 1st, 7pm Israel time (9am Pacific, 10am Mountain, 11am

The 9 DAYS OF JERRY Continue - With Love from "Jerry Day" in San Francisco!
This is the first year that Lorelai and Steve haven't been together for the 9 Days of Jerry. But as hashkacha (Divine Providence) would have it, Lorelai is visiting her family in the Bay Area this summer, and was able to go to the 11th Annual Jerry Day Celebration at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in San Francisco.
What a wonderful day, surrounded by so much color and so much love - and what a trip it was to tell people about RFN and how astonished, delighted and positive people were to discover that there is the world's most hard-core Dead fan base in the Holy Land!
Lorelai interviewed Jerilyn Lee Brandelius, author of the soon to be re-released "Grateful Dead Family Album," (and former wife of Mickey Hart). Also got to meet MOUNTAIN GIRL (what an honor!) and hope to be interviewing her this week as well.
Stu Allen and the Mars Hotel were AMAZING, and of course Melvin Seals and the JGB were the sweetest. But that's not all- immediately after the show, Lorelai was whisked away by her (too modest to be named) magic fairy godmother to Shoreline Amphitheater, to see BOB DYLAN!!! Who opened for Bob but My Morning Jacket (at least half of their set was Grateful Dead cover tunes) and Wilco - joined on stage by BOB WEIR - they did "Ripple" into "St. Stephen" into "When I Paint My Masterpiece." Lorelai for sure thought she was already in heaven.
Bob Dylan blew away the house - it was a gevaldik show - so wonderful to be able to be a part of this love party!

I must report that Bob looked and sounded GREAT. I was surprised but not surprised - after all, it's his most Gemini trait (constant change).
I was sitting next to a metal head-banger who LOVES Dylan and said: "This is my 6th Dylan show and I've figured out he does it on purpose just to f*ck with us," (meaning he sometimes does a less than perfect show just to keep us guessing). The Set List:Things Have ChangedLove SickHighwater?
