World Peace Begins With Shalom Bayit

"Free Spirit" author and domestic violence advocate Joshua Safran sits with his mother Miriam Reed who offered tremendous depth to his presentation with her special appearance at Creating Hope, the annual luncheon of the California-based Jewish domestic violence agency Shalom Bayit. View more photos here.
The war in Israel against Hamas aggression and terror is on everybody's mind. Everyone wants "World Peace" but how many of us realize peace begins at home - and in our own hearts?
In light of that thought, Radio Free Nachlaot is proud to air Creating Hope: Joshua Safran at Shalom Bayit's Annual Gala in San Francisco" this week

Wednesday July 16, 2014 at 9am Pacific / 12N Eastern / 7pm Israel time

Some have called violence against women a national security issue and the numbers speak for themselves. In Israel and globally, it has been estimated that 1 in 3 women experience sexual assault in their lifetimes. In April, the White House announced a new initiative to combat violence against women, stating that 1 in 5 women in college experience sexual assault in the USA.

Intimate partner violence is rampant everywhere. "Studies show that 20 to 30% of Jewish families in the US and Israel experience domestic violence," reports Shalom Bayit, a domestic violence prevention and response center in the San Francisco Bay Area. Now in its 22nd year, Shalom Bayit is known nationally for its culturally-specific model and as a pioneer - as US federal policy to prevent violence against women was only established in the 1990's.

This year's keynote address at the Shalom Bayit annual gala, Creating Hope, featured tremendous people sharing their stories. Renowned attorney and author Joshua Safran - made famous by the film "Crime after Crime" for freeing domestic violence victim Debbie Peagler from prison after serving 19 years - offered some stories from his new autobiographical book "Free Spirit."
Extra special at this event, Safran's mother Miriam Reed presented from her perspective about what it was like to endure the violence that her son describes in his book. You can watch a previous reading from Reed's appearance at an October 2013 Shalom Bayit fundraiser here.
Recordings from the Shalom Bayit event that will air on RFN's program include words from Julie Robbins, LSCW, Author Joshua Safran, Memoir Coach Miriam Reed and Shalom Bayit Executive Director Naomi Tucker.

This broadcast is a special MITZVAH MEDIA PRODUCTION for Radio Free Nachlaot, produced by Wendy Kenin. Don't miss it!

WOW, WE SCORED!!! Our Interviews with MICKEY HART, CRYSTAL MONEE HALL and Incredible Records Founder JONATHON LIPSIN Sunday Sept. 1st at 7pm Israel time!

Friends - We're still HIGH from the MICKEY HART BAND concert in Jerusalem which took place at the magical, magnificent amphitheater venue on Jerusalem's Mt. Scopus, overlooking the Judean desert all the way to the Dead Sea.
Undoubtedly it was the concert of a lifetime for Israel-based Deadheads, who welcomed Mickey Hart, the first member of the Grateful Dead ever to play in Israel (and, by the way, also the first and so far only Dead member to play in both Egypt AND Israel!).
The revelation of the evening was Tony Award-winning vocalist CRYSTAL MONEE HALL, who embodied Shechina with her amazing voice, bringing it down and giving it over like it's never been done before!
We'll be airing our exclusive interviews with both Mickey Hart and Crystal Monee Hall on Radio Free Nachlaot's "Sunday Night Live" show Sunday, September 1st at 7pm Israel time.
This is "appointment listening," people! Tune in to hear Steve and Lorelai live from Undisclosed Studio B in Jerusalem, discussing the concert in-depth and playing both interviews, both of which will later be available for download from our web site.
"Sunday Night Live" on Radio Free Nachlaot will also feature Lorelai's interview with Jonathon Lipsin, founder of the legendary Incredible Records, who flew into Israel from Switzerland for the Mickey Hart concert and has been hanging out in the Holy Land for a couple of weeks.
Jonathon Lipson has more music industry stories to tell than there are ears to hear them in the entire human race. This man is like the Forest Gump of the music industry - the likes of Paul Robeson and Pete Seger were regulars at his parents dinner table in Toronto where he grew up "a red diaper baby," secular Zionist turned Israeli soldier, entrepreneur and founder of what Leonard Cohen called "The Greatest Record Store in the World."
Read more about Jonathan Lipson in this article about the closing of his store after 30 years, and listen to our interview with him on "Sunday Night Live," Sunday September 1st, 7pm Israel time (9am Pacific, 10am Mountain, 11am Central, 12Noon Eastern) on www.radiofreenachlaot.com

The 9 DAYS OF JERRY Continue - With Love from "Jerry Day" in San Francisco!

This is the first year that Lorelai and Steve haven't been together for the 9 Days of Jerry.  But as hashkacha (Divine Providence) would have it,  Lorelai is visiting her family in the Bay Area this summer, and was able to go to the 11th Annual Jerry Day Celebration at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in San Francisco.

What a wonderful day, surrounded by so much color and so much love - and what a trip it was to tell people about RFN and how astonished, delighted and positive people were to discover that there is the world's most hard-core Dead fan base in the Holy Land!

Lorelai interviewed Jerilyn Lee Brandelius, author of the soon to be re-released "Grateful Dead Family Album," (and former wife of Mickey Hart). Also got to meet MOUNTAIN GIRL (what an honor!) and hope to be interviewing her this week as well.

Stu Allen and the Mars Hotel were AMAZING, and of course Melvin Seals and the JGB were the sweetest. But that's not all- immediately after the show, Lorelai was whisked away by her (too modest to be named) magic fairy godmother to Shoreline Amphitheater, to see BOB DYLAN!!! Who opened for Bob but My Morning Jacket (at least half of their set was Grateful Dead cover tunes) and Wilco - joined on stage by BOB WEIR - they did "Ripple" into "St. Stephen" into "When I Paint My Masterpiece." Lorelai for sure thought she was already in heaven.

Bob Dylan blew away the house - it was a gevaldik show - so wonderful to be able to be a part of this love party!

Lorelai reports:

I must report that Bob looked and sounded GREAT. I was surprised but not surprised - after all, it's his most Gemini trait (constant change).

I was sitting next to a metal head-banger who LOVES Dylan and said: "This is my 6th Dylan show and I've figured out he does it on purpose just to f*ck with us," (meaning he sometimes does a less than perfect show just to keep us guessing).

The Set List:
Things Have Changed
Love Sick
Highwater
? (have no idea) probably from Bob's new album "Tempest"
Simple Twist of Fate
Ducaine Whistle
She Belongs To Me
? (really have no idea) also probably from "Tempest"
Desolation Row
Blind Willie McTell
Simple Twist of Fate
Summer Days
All Along The Watchtower
Ballad of a Thin Man
